    Okay, Nixels...

    :confused

Haha - I had to call BigWan over - "Matt, what in the f**k is Nixels trying to say...?"
At first he said, "Kel, what do I always tell you? Just smile and nod..."

But he couldn't figure it out either.
Then we watched the video with the sound WAY up (that castanet lady is a crack up, by the way).

    :lol3 Okay, got it!

Oh, and thanks for getting me in trouble with BigWan :bluduh
("hey, Nixels is right...I didn't notice that before!")

Thanks, ladybug :thumb i do what I can!

Hi kaia - great to hear from you! That's interesting, we didn't have any on-the-fly routes fail. The PN-60 itself was great - our issues were with the Topo 9 software. Hopefully there's a patch or something (haven't checked since we got home).

Thanks for the camera info! I've been dealing with the sticky lens for over a year now. It mostly happens when we're riding with other people. And I just flick the side of the lens with my finger (Or I can tap it against my helmet if we're moving and I need to hold on). I'm sure that it won't work forever, so The Lumix TS2 sounds like our best bet.
This post from isaac004 was also helpful ("A father and son trip down the great divide"). He loves his TS1.
I wish the TS2 took AA batteries (like our Canon), but I guess you can't have it all.

Hi xymo - I only make note of crossings if they're kind of big or if I have a photo for some reason. But we had a few little ones down south.
The main crossing (Crane Crossing) is coming up. It's the second crossing when you go South to North.
    Thanks, larryboy! Fixed it, above.
Did Lion cross the Malheur? I thought he turned and went towards Sisters. I can't remember...

hi wachs! Isn't that oregon? HOT cold HOT rain HOT snow RAIN :D

    Day 8 continued...

So, we were blasting along when we came to another water crossing...

Oh, wait a minute...This is the one we were looking for!
    The North Fork

Umm. Is it just me, or does it look kinda deep?
Matt said we could do it 2up just fine, but I was feeling a little jumpy.

They (matt and the bike) were better off without me...so I waded across.

    :jive

I know, I know. Sigh. Let the ADV insults begin...
(“"nice sundress,” “that billowy skirt is going to get caught in the chain,” “your vagina is showing,” etc...")
Well, at least I actually have a vagina. :lol3

    Of course, matt was right...

    Trayce, too.

All right. It was no big deal. I’'m just a chickenshit. :baby

    :robin

    Back on the trail...
    More glorious dirt

    Back into the forest.
Here’'s a few seconds of Gravitycheck...

At one point, Norm wanted us to go down here (on the left, where the little trees are).

The trail (523) was way overgrown. Hello - baby trees!
In the past, Matt and I would have tried it anyway.
("“well, if this is the trail...”")
And we would have plowed our way right into some shit.

But with the Voice of Reason in our ear, we found another route.

    :dllama:

Hey, this common sense thing is pretty nice!

Unfortunately, somewhere around our detour, the Garmin and the Delorme disagreed.

Trayce said to go one way, Norm said to go the other. :dunno
Neither of us (BW or LW) can remember what happened, but the end result was that we missed Table Rock lookout. Crap! :pissed

Trayce isn'’t here so we'’ll blame it on the Garmin! :lol3

I watched the sheep video three times. :lol3

The first crossing where you took a bath is called the Malheur Ford and the second is called Crane Crossing. :deal

My ass doesn't have skin left and I can't sit in this chair any longer, but I just had to check in and see how your trip is going!!

I knew you would know that stuff.
Oh, matt reminds me that he knew, I just never asked. :huh
Apparently I missed some signs (he was probably standing up)...

    Hi guys,
sorry I'm late. I had to attend an awards ceremony this morning...

Hi pyrate! thank you, and I'm so glad you like the edited photo! :lol3

Okay, where were we? Jeeeze. Still on Day 8?

    Day 8 continued....

It was really pretty as we headed towards Unity

    Going into town

Uh oh. Is the gas station?

Whew, no, there's a new one.

The woman at the store said that 10,000 BMWs were coming through Unity, on their way to the rally.
Her main observation was that "they're all old!"

    :gerg

Don't get mad at me - she said it! :lol3

    Got fuel

    Took pics

We decided to eat at the cafe down the street

    checked out the menu

This is when I knew I had to do a ride report...
Trayce was so into the food pics - it was cute :D

    :dukegirl

I don't blame him, though. These burgers were really good. Yum!

While we were eating, a BMW guy came in and got a diet coke.
He glanced over at us - and quickly told the waitress, "I'll take that outside..."

Wow, he could smell us from there? :eek7

Or maybe somebody needs to work on his people skills...
    :queenie

(okay, you Beemers - don't freak out on me. Just smile more and wave a little) :lol3
(we were snubbed** again and again by guys on BMWs so I'm just making a few digs to assuage my hurt feelings :cry)

** just on the pavement - we love you Marty and Gus :wave
(you'll meet Marty and Gus in colorado. :D)

Edit to add this from page 15 (for those of you who aren't caught up yet):

Hi Ladybug :wave oops, I forgot you ride a BMW. hope I didn't hurt your feelings either...
Maybe I should take the Beemer jabs out...
But, you know the type - those guys with the big, clean, chromey machines; wearing the black suits...too cool for school.
    Too good to wave.
Ah, screw it. I'm leaving 'em in :lol3

:thumb Great report! Any chance you could post or send some tracks? I'm scouting routes for Mobius' re-entry into the lower 48 next year and from the looks of it, you guys ferreted out some of the tasty :bow... well played.

I gotta say, when we hit the snow drifts, I flip to the topo maps and check the elevation of the road ahead. We've never made it higher than 400ft in elevation beyond that first drift before the road became impassable -- meaning the snow is higher than 2 ft. deep all the way across the path so we turned around, not we plowed ahead until we buried the bikes, and then went all Fitzcarraldo. :lol3 YOU GUYS ARE NUTS! I love it!

    Hey DR. Rock :wave
    Thanks for checking in :D

Well, our actual tracks from the ride are kind of a mess. They're still sitting in Norm and we haven't cleaned them up at all.

However, we just used tracks that we got from larryboy, and ADV.
I'm pretty sure these are the ones:

The Pacific Crest Quest from R-dubb We did Day 6 and Day 7 on this ride.
(gpx link at the bottom of that first post)

Oregon Back Country Discovery Route, again from R-dubb Our gpx files came from larryboy, but I think he was using these tracks.
Larryboy, correct me if I'm wrong...

We went up Crane Mountain by accident, just trying to "connect the dots." It shouldn't be hard to route yourself onto that trail...
When the GPS tracks stop - just take the steep, loose, LEFT up the mountain! :lol3

    more OBCDR track info here

CD ride from BigDog Including the optional Fleecer Ridge tracks.

We had some issues getting to Lava Mountain, but it was probably us.
Someone who knows how to plan can map out a better route from the CDT to Lava Mountain to Fleecer Ridge and then back on the trail.
BigWan and I did a crap job of it.

Oh, that reminds me - we did detour off the CDT tracks to go to Farson, WY. Totally worth it.
Our ride through the Great Divide Basin was spectacular!
    I read about Farson here

TAT west - Well, I'm pretty sure that you're good on TAT tracks...:rofl

If you're looking for more ideas, there's BigDog's new ride Mex/Can
Also...the Tour of Idaho is all the rage these days.
I know with all that talk of "no big bikes," Matt is itching to get out there! :evil

Hi Gale! Oh, I know. Just like there are jerky KTM riders, too...

    :webers
I know you would wave at us! :wave

    Day 8 continued...

Leaving Unity, we had one white-knuckle section of scary-deep base rock, but after that the roads were good.

    Good road

Stopped up here for a group photo

Got directed down to some single track, but Trayce wasn'’t feeling it...

Once again, the Voice of Reason prevailed and we went back to the good road.

    :dllama:

    Got to an OHV track.

Trayce wasn'’t sure that he would fit! His wide load is about 45"” :gdog

My biggest fear about these narrow OHV trails is running into a Yahoo coming from the opposite direction. POW!
    But, it didn't happen today.
It was a fun, but short, section.
Then the track spit us out on the highway.

    Sumpter, here we come!

It was just after 6:30 when we got to Sumpter and the gas pumps were already locked.
    Shit!

Luckily, the folks there are really nice and they came out and unlocked one for us. :D

The woman at the gas station was talking about one of the new products they were stocking - some kind of drink called “FOUR loko.”

She and her friend decided to do a taste test...
"Woo whee!" - not only did it get them hammered (12% alcohol), but the woman said it made them want to "chase bunnies!"

    :ear

Intrigued, we bought a 24 oz can. :augie

    Sumpter had some interesting signage...

Um. I don'’t think a hummingbird made that nest...
Oh. Wait... Is that the joke? :scratch

    Nice assortment of bird houses.

Thanks for the scouting 411, and especially that one looks right up our alley (I wonder why they didn't name it the "Trans-Idaho Trail" like all the other ones modeled after the TAT -- you know, TWVT, TNJT, etc.)

Questor... guess who's coming to dinner and leaving the Drz's with you after Mobius 8 next fall? :brow

    Day 8 continued...

We had the option of free camping, but the spots we found were mostly sloping, dank, and thick with mosquitoes.
I sprung for the $6 campground - I thought it was worth having a table, a flat spot and a bathroom.

The guys seemed okay with it...

I tried to get caught up in my journal

I enjoyed peeking at larryboy’'s journal, so here’'s a glimpse of mine

Oh crap. Looking at my journal, I realize I completely skipped this part of today:

Riding together was getting so dusty, we sent Trayce on ahead.
A little while later, we saw a huge cloud of dust going up to the right and Matt laughed, "That must be Trayce..."
We followed it for a while, until Norman started to chrip that we were going the wrong way. We went back, confused.

Turns out that Trayce almost got taken out by a logging truck that had come barreling though the middle of the road! :yikes
The dust we had been following was from that truck.

It was a "gentle" reminder that no matter how empty these roads appear, you never know what's coming around the corner. :deal

Whew. So glad we didn't lose Gravitycheck that afternoon!
    :beer

    Group shot

FOUR loko (fruit punch flavor). 12% alcohol.
    It tastes like cough syrup.

Trayce was pretty into it :lol3

Then I noticed something on the label...It’s full of caffeine! :eek7
What the hell? That’'s the last thing we want tonight.

After getting home, I did some research about FOUR loko.
Apparently, it’'s so horrible, several communities are trying to have it banned.

Other bad news? It contains wormwood, one of the active ingredients of absinthe. And one can packs about 660 calories!

We finished off the beer and the guys tried to plan tomorrow’'s route.
    Roasted socks for dessert?

It was about this time when Trayce started hunting for his headlamp.
He was tearing through his luggage, checking all his bags...
“Dammit, where is that thing? I had it last night. I had it this morning.
    I had it..Uh oh....”

And that’s when we realized that the headlamp had probably gone AWOL during this morning's ADV bike assplosion.
    :baldy

So, if you found a nice headlamp on the banks of the Malheur...
It was a little gift from The Voice of Reason :D
