    Hi Gale!
Actually, your link gave us a different song - "M.T.A"!
    :confused
We were slightly confused at first, but I did a search and found this
    link to "Desert Pete" .
That song is perfect! We enjoyed it.
    :D

    Thanks so much!

I'm still enjoying this ride report and taking notes for my next adventure.
Try to stay out of the snow - Check
    Two GPSs - Check
    A real map - Check
    Enjoy every second - Check

One of my friends had been quietly following this report (he doesn't like to clutter up peoples ride reports while I'm a bit of a clutterer) and he left on a dirt ride Wed. Last night I was able to talk with him on the phone for a few minutes and he was laughing as he told me about and ugly rock garden section he'd ridden in SE Oregon. He said he thought about this report and was telling himself "make rocks your favorite". :lol3

Adding to my list of notes:
Make XYZ your favorite - Check - I love it!

Big Wan can try all he wants but I don't think he has a chance of getting all the kids in romper room to behave, especially with LarryBoy in the group. :poser

Waiting patiently - sort of - for more stories. This is just way too much fun. :thumb

    Hiya Ladybug :wave
Haha, that's great! Thanks for the giggles. :rofl

I'm glad the grumpy boss is helping someone else!
Laughing at the shitty parts makes them easier to get through.

Speaking of which, I think BigWan has given up on managing the nut house.
He probably realized that you guys need some recess time in order to get through this long ass report!
    :snore

only 34 days to go.... :lol3

Day 8: 7/14/10 Big Creek CG, OR to Sumpter, OR 155 miles

It got cold last night - 30F degrees or so. I love my cozy sleeping bag (Marmot Pinnacle, ladies regular ) and it only weighs 2.5 lbs!

Matt is not as enamored with his Big Agnes Encampment . I think he needs the down version ( 0 degree).
Anyone out there have the Storm King? Is it cozy?

Started off with a hot breakfast - duraznos con crema (peaches and cream) oatmeal.
We'’ve had these packets sitting around forever (leftover from Mexico).
I guess forever was too long. They were pretty clumpy and hard. Yum.

Before we left home, I had started making some little ADV mascot guys.

Some were like Coney, the safety cone, [IMG] and others were just random.

I thought it would be fun to leave them along the trail, for other ADVers.
I ended up saving the majority for the TAT, but this morning I had Trayce pick one out.

Matt already knew which one Trayce would choose...

    Hee! Perfect. :rayof

We didn’'t want to go all the way back to Seneca to get on the trail, so Matt asked Norm to take us to the Frazier Point Lookout.

Norm picked some nice roads for us.

    Cows! Good morning, ladies...

    Here comes Gravitycheck...

    Auuuggggh!

    What? Cows don’t like gravity?

Now I thought I'd find some great link for "cows don't like gravity" but the best I could do was this . :loco
    I guess I don't do enough drugs to fully appreciate cow-anchulas :lol3

    What a beautiful morning.

    A little water crossing...

Ooh - it looks like we’re about to eat it here...
But, we didn'’t. Just slipped a little on a rock.:knary

    Here we are...

    Here’'s Frazier Lookout.
    Wait... BigWan, they can’'t see!

    Okay, here’'s Frazier Lookout.

    Uh oh. What’'s this?

Trayce was so excited about climbing the lookout, I don'’t think he even saw the signs. “What, you guys aren'’t coming up??”

Matt, at almost 300 lbs and with size 15 feet, decided that he exerts too much ground pressure to mess with that.
Me, I don'’t do scary wood structures. Plus, I’'m scared of heights. Sorry.

Don'’t worry - here comes “the Voice of Reason!”

    :dllama:

Oh, did I mention that Gravitycheck is an EMT?

Here'’s Trayce’s contribution to “the Summer of Stupid.”

And, here'’s what he saw from up there...

I know, who would have guessed? He saw a bunch of trees! :lol3

The Lodge has the strangest (and cool) business model I've ever seen.

You just leave them "whatever" you feel it was worth to stay there. I bailed out on my OBCDR trip yesterday from there and they really tempted me to stay. I had no money at all, wasn't even a problem, they said I could mail it to em, :huh They take hospitality to a whole nuther level:deal

(so yes, it would have been spectacularly expensive)

And the place is REALLY nice inside, I'm going to do the trip again and start from there I think.

    Hey xymotic -
    What are you doing home??

When matt saw that you bailed in Seneca, he said...

    "Rut Rogh!"
    Make Big RUTS your favorite!
    :lol3

We loved the Big Creek campground, but it's good to know that the Lodge people are so nice and friendly.

The short story is that I ran out of money, and realized I was 500 miles from home and had $40 to my name. So I'll take your month of stupid times 2, and Raise you with that.:thumb

The longer story is that I HATE my Garmin, It was routing me on crap and I just wasn't having fun. I got sick and puked a couple times, got no sleep and was just in a generally foul mood. I was pretty much done with motorcycling... til I got to Seneca and that was one of the best days ever, so I'll be back.

RR will be here Maybe, if I ever get around to it:deal

Okay, I'm going to nip this one in the bud...
Some people like the Bearcat Lodge, some people don't.

We didn't stay there so I don't care either way. :lol3

I have a bunch of photos to edit, so please don't turn my ride report into a hotel review while I'm not looking...

(That's what Trip Advisor is for!)

    Thanks :D

Here are some sheep we saw on Engineer Pass in colorado.
They were butting heads at first, but now they're friends.

    Day 8 continued...

All three of us vaguely remembered seeing a big river crossing in various OBCDR ride reports.
We asked each other, “Is this it?”

    Malheur River. That sounds familiar...
(Why do assholes always shoot up the signs?)

Matt and I decided to go first so I could shoot some video of Trayce.

Gravitycheck made it look easy - yay, Trayce!

Since they had wet feet anyway (from the splashing), the guys wanted to stop and hang out by the river.

It was a bathing/laundry/goof off opportunity we couldn'’t pass up.

We started off just rinsing our gear in the water,
but when Trayce broke out the Herbal Essences “Body Envy” volumizing shampoo,
    we were super stoked.

That guy really knows how to pamper himself on a camping trip. :lol3

We all washed our faces and our sweaty bald heads.

Pretty soon there was shit strewn everywhere...

In either color, the KTM 9x0 makes a great drying rack. :rofl

Hahaha! Damn, you went north, I was going south, I was thinking I was clearly on the wrong trails because I didn't have a single water crossing and I thought there were like dozens. NOTHING looked familiar and then I got to that spot and recognized it fron Lion BR's great RR. Did you have smaller creek crossings further south?

I also could not resist the temptation to sit a spell, it is without a doubt the nicest campsite I've ever seen. It blew my mind that on a Saturday on Labor Day Weekend I had the place to myself.

Anyway, I'm waiting with bated breath to see your pics & hear your comments about the northern part.:clap

Did you cross the Malhuer Twice? There's another crossing at Malhuer ford Which I thought you would have crossed before you got to this point. :confused

    Hey Guys,
Sorry if I over-reacted to the Hotel reviews. I just didn't want a classic ADV trainwreck.
Nonsense, I can handle. The other stuff, I cannot.
(not that either xymo or hanksmybuddy were out of line - this was just preemptive paranoia on my part)

    Thanks for understanding :D
    :flug

Hi xymotic - I'll get to you tomorrow...

It's Nixels and his sensitive eyes I'm worried about right now...

LittleWan - loving the ride report... keep it up! you're doing awesome on the pics, narration, everything! i've been waiting for you two to get out on the new(er) orange(ish) beast ever since you got it. looks like you had a great time.

    :lurk

a few random comments that i figured i'd compile into one post to minimize the clutter....

i did the same thing you guys did with the PN-60... purchased it, pre-loaded all the maps i needed, thought i was all set-up, and then left on a trip, only to have it stop routing for me completely on day two. unlike you guys i didn't have a laptop with me, so i was stuck with what i had. the next three days were route-less, having to zoom in and out all the time to see where i was and make sure i was going in the right direction.

one thing i found... if you on-the-fly make a route and it fails... delete it. leaving it on the device can corrupt any means of routing again. and update your firmware before leaving on a long trip. :doh

i had the same thing with the lens not closing happen... and recently switched from a Canon SD870 to the Lumix TS2 which i love. sure enough (always my luck...) they released a smaller version (with a feature or few less, but cheaper) a few weeks after i bought the TS2... the Lumix TS10.

the big differences between the two other than size is the lens (TS2 @ 28mm & TS10 @ 35mm) and that the TS10 doesn't record in AVCHD Lite, when the TS2 does. having used the TS2 shooting from a shooting motorcycle... i'd highly recommend either the TS2 or TS10 when you do get in the market for a new camera. the power on/off time is lightning fast, and the iA (intelligent auto) mode is actually usable for almost everything. there's a bunch of adv'ers who shoot with the same camera ( geek & Dr.Rock off the top of my head )

The picture below looked fine and respectable until you did this to it and then it made me about spit coffee all over my computer. :poser It now looks like something really weird was going on. :lol3 (Good Job :evil )
