Well it looks like there are at least a few of us out there that associate with SW Virginia! Let's carve out this little portion of the internet to share some rides, routes, get-togethers, etcetera.

Where is SW Virginia exactly? Well, according to Google:

Let's include our neighbors in TN, KY and WV as well. They're pretty remote too!

Below is the original post that kicked off this thread when I moved to Norton, VA in Jan, 2016:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, howdy from Mississippi! Y'all sure do have an active regional forum up here.

So life will be taking us to Wise, VA for the next couple of years. Of course we have lots of questions...

First and foremost, what is the appropriate regional thread for the area? Eastern TN? Western NC? All the Virginia threads seem too far away.

Can somebody familiar with this lovely and huge regional forum give me a heads up?

    Thanks!

I find the same problem. I live 2 counties north of Wise in Buchanan County. It seems all the Virginia chatter on here is from northern VA. You will probably find more active members in the Eastern TN area as you're closer.
    Welcome to VA!

I thought that might be the case. I didn't know there was anywhere east of the Mississippi as remote as that part of VA. It's a geographical oddity; two hours from everywhere. I'm looking forward to it!

Not far away, in Pike Co., Ky. Not much for any of us in any of the forums. Maybe should start one for the Ky/Va/WV area. We are all 2 hours+ from everywhere.

Ride a lot, post not too much.
Best riding there is. visitvirginiamountains.com is just a start.
Good area unless you like restaurants.

I thought I was in a low ADV population density area before, but this is something else. Pike Co., KY isn't far at all though...

Thanks for the link! That's a great start to some routes!

And yeah, not a lot of restaurants around Norton, VA; turns out that's where we will be living. Our new house has a big kitchen though:deal.

Well, we made it to Norton. I got in one ride last Saturday before the temp plummeted. I guess all of us will come out of hibernation in the spring!

    Not really.

Not all of it, but most of West Virginia is just as remote, if not more so.

I'll have to ride up and check it out sometime. A good friend of mine said that West Virginia was one of the prettiest places he's ever seen. It's going to have to work hard to top Virginia though!

I love riding in a region where you can go hours without a traffic light.

So, this coming Saturday highs are projected for the 50's and no rain. I didn't get out this past weekend, so I'm thinking about a "breakfast run". Leave in the morning, ride and have a very late breakfast somewhere around 11am-noon. Then ride home. Anyone wanna meet up somewhere? Know where they got good donuts? Or BBQ?
Not picky, flexible on time. Any takers?

I was planning to get out for a few hours on Saturday. Got to be back home in time to start some smoking some BBQ for Sunday(4:00 or so). Where are you located/where do you want to go?

I'm in Pikeville, Ky, about 45 minutes north of Wise/Norton Va. Not particular plans, just wanna ride. Not specific on time either. could meet you in Wise/Norton anytime and go from there.

I had a route laid out on google maps that went to the west but it's all speculation for me at this point. I'd be glad to follow a local down any crooked road you know. It seems like it's pretty hard to find a bad direction to ride around here:ricky.

We could meet up here, there or in-between. I'm flexible on time as well; preferably sometime after the frost burns off. I wish I knew of a good breakfast place...

91/42 From Saltville VA. Is nice, and of course 16. WV 3 is a good one. Lots of great roads in that general area. You should check out Bear mtn road from Marion over to 42. There is also a awesome road off Veterans pkw in Gate city that is gravel for a while then turns to paved, i would have to look it up on my GPS.
I could go on and on with roads i have ridden up there.

This area is a common destination for me due to the wonderful roads. I start just Southeast of Sparta NC and attempt to get lost.
