While searching for information on which channels will be carrying the race this year I ran across this:

    http://bajasafari.blogspot.com/2011/12/marc-dorcel-makes-off-road-history-in.html

which made me wonder whether our boy has a support team like this? Wow? It must work ---didn't that guy win last year?

But what I really want to know is whether it will be on "Speed' channel? or, if not, where? Can anyone tell me?

Good Luck Ned, I just noticed this thread about your latest adventure, I guess I have been working too hard lately and haven't had time to visit AdvRider as much as I once did. I had a chance to help you with a pit stop in the Baja 500 you did and it comes as no suprise that you are about to take on the Dakar. I just ordered some of your stuff as a way of supporting your fabulous ride!

It will be a thrill to follow your adventure......:clap:clap:clap

I believe is is pronounced the same as "Dr. Suess" (as in the cat in the hat).

I think it actually sounds more like "cease" , like cease and desist.

Yup. :nod I suspect any sort of announcing or video coverage will probably use the "Dr. Suesse" pronunciation, though...

    Like RR said, it's "cease".

A couple of things I'd like to add.

First, I have been incredibly flattered by the support and goodwill from everyone here. This has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I'm not only really excited to live it, I'm even more excited to share it as you all of have made it possible to go. The slideshow was a blast, as an economist I couldn't help but add a graph (thanks to c.vestal for making it presentable):

This also seems like a good moment to share another part of the back story. Carlos M, a name very familiar to all the dakar addicts around here for his years of involvement with the Dakar in Portugal and insightful commentary more recently, made me an offer I couldn't refuse earlier this year: that I come over and borrow a bike and compete in a rally in Morocco. He and his crew at motoxplorers in Portugal made it possible and it was an amazing experience.

They are the ones who pushed me over the critical threshold depicted above, and I want to thank them for it, I think. :deal

They rent bikes for very reasonable rates in Portugal, and will make it easy for you to have a tour of whatever type you'd prefer- from just bike rental, to help with reservations and GPS routes on the best roads, to fully guided... and for a lot less than I ever thought it would cost. Any of you that are looking at winter blues, you might consider a ride in the Iberian peninsula this winter or next spring. Email or PM and they'll sort you out.

PS: Glad the wine is arriving! Layer Cake Rocks!

If Ned makes it into the Eurosport coverage of Mr. Carlton "Desspray" Kirby, all bets are off...

LOL...so true...IMO, if he makes Euorsport coverage the first time around, I don't think he should be too picky about pronunciations...he'll be the only one down there with that name, however anyone says it.

    Hi Ned:

I'm only a race supporter and I already have pre-race jitters. :huh
Good luck on your quest. :clap

I was helping John pack for San Diego and got handsomely rewarded. :D

That's some keen intel, indeed! Sooo...if my girlfriends father's house(where I will be visiting over the holidays) had Versus available, will it transfer over seamlessly? I will be there through the 2nd and then back to real computer contact the 3rd-on...

Would anyone be willing to put together a list of places(non-thread) where we can get updates for:

    1. Ned's effort

    and

    2. general 2011 Dakar information?
The more video of anything - the better, IMO.

There was a Dakar App for Android last year that was a complete bust, and many of the other sites would not stream on my phone at all even with solid 3G or WiFi connections, so I was left really in the dark with no way to know it was gonna be that way until things got started...

I'm working on a new satellite that will provide a live aerial view video feed of anything they point it at. I just have to put a little circuit mod in there so I can take control of it in January, and point it at Ned. Ned, please add a high contrast cross-hair symbol on the top of your helmet!
