Nice report! Glad a rail riding hobo or something worse didn't jump out of that old container and attack you. Looks like some fun exploring! :clap

Great thread with great pictures. I love exploring old rail lines and tunnels. There are alot of them in W.V. that have been converted to bike/hike trails. Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting.

This is been a fun adventure. When this all started out I was only looking for one tunnel. But it seems to have turned into a theme. I don't know how much longer I'll continue with it, but there are 5 more tunnels on this one rail line. It's my understanding that this line has been taken over by the state and it will be converted over to a "rails to trails". And at that point you will be able to hike from Banks Oregon all the way out to the coast.
Once again I hope everybody's enjoying these little adventures, because I'm having a blast.

What is the plan for next weekend? I am fine with recreating your rides after the fact but if you have want an idiot or three to come along next time I am game.

Love the rides so far. I am new to Oregon and *this* is what I came for.

Well it's been a little while since I've added anything to this thread. I have made a few trips out into the woods. And today I managed to find four more tunnels. :clap This means there's only one tunnel I haven't been through yet. And hopefully, in the next few weeks I’ll get out and find that one also. Especially because there's a couple trestles that are in that area that I would like to see. :thumb
So today started out as a gorgeous day.

I started out by going down beaver slide Road. Which is a fun winding downhill for a couple of miles.

It's amazing what the power of water can do.

And things started out great. Within a very short distance I found both a bridge and tunnel. Together.

Along the way there were definitely some interesting sights to see.

Within a mile or so I did find the next tunnel. And at first glance I was a little concerned whether I'd be able to get through this one. As it first appeared like the roof was completely caved in. But fortunately when I got to the entrance there was a lot of room to climb over the blockage.

I did have a couple of side excursions along the way. I found this really interesting campsite way back in on a deer trail. I didn't climb down the hill to it. As time was running out and I had more than an hour hike, just to get back to the trail. And another 45 min. back to the highway.

So this trip I took a lot of pictures. But I didn't want to overload this thread, :evil so anyone that would like to see them can go to my smug mug account below. So I think this is about the end of looking for tunnels for a while as this is the time of year that I like to do a lot of three and four day trips every couple weeks. :ricky So let's see what kind of interesting things I can come up with next.

    And of course,,,,,,,,,,

Great report on your adventures. A pic of a local twin tunnel in northern KY at Lamb's Ferry near Alexandria. Rumor has it they're haunted, and that fact plus the fact they are still quite actively in use will keep me out of them. Don't want to find out the hard way that the light at the end of the tunnel is really....well, you know.

That is exactly what we were looking for last weekend. Mount a razor sharp cow catcher on the front and a loop for your front wheel on the back, and take out all the brush on the line!

Looking forward to finding that gem.

The weekend prior (5/12) we started at timber and rode the rails to Cochran rd. No mean feat considering the brush and trees that have started to sprout on the line. But no bridges. No tunnels.

Last Sunday though (5/19). Sunday was a massive tunnel scouting ride. We started our search at Beaver Slide rd. Far and away the most fun road I have found in Oregon yet - a steep dirt road cut into the side of the mountain, complete with ruts, washouts and switchbacks. Not treacherous. Unless you cannot resist the urge to blast through it.

We did find some interesting railroad features this time. This is JJ's thread, so I will stick to just pictures.

Outstanding guys :clap :clap :thumb :nod
Not only did you catch up with, me you surpassed. We are 2 for 2. You haven't been to the Walcott tunnel at Strassel. and I haven't gotten to the tunnel that has a Trestle on both sides of it. And then neither one of us made it to Enright where the cabin is. All for another day. Maybe this weekend. :evil

So gentlemen, your next assignment...... go to the first tunnel in this thread.
    BUT........you need to start here.........................

    https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=45.729483,-122.997469&hl=en&sll=45.729468,-122.997469&sspn=0.004381,0.009645&t=h&mra=mift&sz=17&z=17

And if you're feeling adventurous. Start on the East side. Or if you want to be whooshes you can start on the West side. :deal

I've marked walcott tunnel on my map, but haven't made it there yet.

Really some gorgeous terrain to cover. http://imgur.com/a/PMH4H

We've got plenty to discover, but I'm wondering if there will ever be another goldmine like this one.
