Is that photo from the Height of Land turnout on route 17? I'm pretty familiar with the area. We summered up in Rangeley several years.

Following dockingpilots old tracks will put us on some dirt roads that parallel route 17 in that area. Looking forward to seeing some back country I've never seen before.

great route Frank, you won't remember, but you graciously sent me GPS tracks shortly after your report went up on ADV. i finally rode VT, NH, and part of Maine in August before running short of time on my way to Quebec. thanks again.

a quick route advisory...i found a locked gate at mile 7 on the section between 27 and 201 in Maine. i don't know whether this gate is normally open, or just bad luck to find it locked. there is another series of logging roads closer to the Quebec border which i ended up using to get east to Jackman. some of the roads showed little or no use, and it's a long walk if a solo rider encounters a problem out there. it's a maze of logging roads, best to know where you're going.

at the gate/gatehouse. the road on the right goes to some camps on a small lake, and didn't look like a ride-around on the GPS. anyone on a bike could obviously ride around the gate, but i wasn't sure of the consequences and backtracked out. i heard later that a timber company had a hunt camp somewhere along the road, and closed it. true or not, don't know for sure.

We rode that section 2 weekends ago and there were no closed gates, and no signs saying “no motorcycles”. Just a few “no ATV” signs. They were actively logging much of the area, so any time we met an oncoming lot truck we pulled off the side of the road for them to pass and gave the driver a wave.

no signs, just a padlocked gate. some bad luck to find it closed. the locals did know about the closed gate(s).
