Well, yes, Θρυπτή or as you may pronounce it in English: Thripti
Yes, Thripti! For those who do not know that part of Crete, this small report will clarify what this Thipti really is :evil

The whole story starts a few days before when two friends with their fat pigs (R1200GSA) asked my mate yns to help them find a place to "get a bit mud on their bikes". And me, being the planer of the group, chose this mountainous area to explore.
But, let me introduce me to the team of today's adventure:

Me, Nikos (markas) with my silver F800GS:

Riding as pillion and taking photos, my wife Kiriaki :

My mate Yannis (yns) also a huge contributor of photos, with his yellow F800GS:

And the two guest stars for this adventure, Marios (ramiod) with his red R1200GSA :

And Nikos (Hektor) with his silver R1200GS :

Sunday morning, 09:05 we arrive at the cafe we arive a bit late for the appointment. But instead of three bikes we see 9, all BMW Gs's. Seems the our local Gs club has come to wish us good luck and drink a coffee with us.
I must admit, those GSA are impressive beasts to look at!

09:30 and we start our engines.

We get on the "highway" which stretches from west to east of the island and head east

Small stop for gas and check the air preasure on our tires in Malia...

...pass outside Άγιος Νικόλαος (Agios Nikolaos)...

...and at last, after a fast 45min's ride...

...we arrive at the village of Καβούσι (Kabousi)

I might not have a decent picture of the village (typical old village for Crete, nothing to see for us here) but here you can see a map of our route till now. Right after the village we turn right and after asking some locals we find the dirt road we seek. If you check again the previous picture, the Canyon to the right is where we are heading!

Before we continue our trip into some hard dirt roads we let the tires cool a bit and the smokers light a cigarette while we admire each others bikes.

Nice, but... a bit too fat.

I like the more slim approach of my gs

We hit the road and from the start it shows us its teeth. First it goes a bit downhill into almost the bottom of the canyon but then it starts a steep climb. It is hard, full of rocks fixed in the ground or fallen recently on it, and with many water carved ditches criss crossing the road.

It is hard to capture a decent photo while riding on this road but Kiriaki makes the best she can.

We open a few iron gates on route (don't forget, those gates are not to keep you out, just to keep the sheep from running around)...

Time passes, the pigs struggle to keep up but none complains. The more we climb uphill, the more the view becomes more beautiful.

The road we came is down. The road we will return is at the opposite mountain (if all goes well)

Way down there is our road, crawling out of the canyon.

Thripti is a village located on the slopes of the mountain Thripti right next to the small forest of Thripti. (yeah, i know, what can i say, they where out of ideas for naming) The villagers are mostly shepherds who also cultivate a few vegetables or grain, mostly for personal use. Two taverns are open now since a cement road reached this village a three years ago. It is still not much developed, a place well hidden from the casual tourer's eyes. As you have noticed we didn't take the cement road but another, more challenging one. If you want to find the easy route, go open a map yourselves, don't expect me to write everything, just go try exploring a bit yourself :evil

Well, we don't go near the village this time but turn right just a km before we reach it.

Just 1-2 km's after, the road stops at a dead end and leads us to a spot...

But now, a break for a few days. I am going out for some adventure. Nothing fancy, but it involves lots of Raki drinking, meat eating, singing etc with some friends...:freaky

    See you next Monday :D

Very interesting ride report(s). I'm learning more about Crete from you than I ever did from a school book. And wonderful photo's as well.

Thank you all for your kind words. More will come, some with more information about the history of Crete

How come you can write Greek? It is of course in Latin characters (greeklish as we say here) but pretty good written.
Ευχαριστώ για τα καλά σου σχόλια.
