I'm planning a scooter trip to Charleston, SC to see the Hunley. Would anyone have any recommendations for decent scenic roads in this part of the country?

Congratulations on the new bike Eric!

I guess WE wouldn't know it unless WE were fishing around in the XMAX thread.:lurk

Combine it brother! Get to riding & writing.

All the best with the new addition Eric!!

I saw his pic in the Xmax thread and it never occurred to me that he bought it. I figured he just happened to see one and snapped a pic.

I'm kind of disappointed. His last two scooters buys were epic fly and rides. I would have expected for him to buy this somewhere on the West Coast and ride it home:lol3

Ummm.. thank you guys. I'm rather embarrassed that I bought it. I sold off a few things around the house to foot the bill. I feel a tad bit greedy having a m/c and 2 scoots so I was just being kind of quiet about it. :shog

Sorry, I don't have any advice for the route but I am looking forward to reading your trip report and what you have to say about the Hunlee museum.

Maybe head west so you can pick up a couple hundred miles of the MABDR then back east?

Embarrassed? You forget who's reading this? I have 3 scooters and two motorcycles. Sam has a bunch of bikes too.

I’ve had my fair share. Most the time I’m a one bike kinda guy, but at one point in time I had 150 bikes, had to rent shipping containers in storage yards to keep em all. Then moved em to my former house, in the backyard, had those tent car ports (4 of em) all full of my bikes, and had 25 of em stacked on a shelf in the garage. It was sheer craziness and I’ll never do it again. Of the 150, I’d say 100 I could grab and ride whenever, and 50 were parts and projects, takes a lot of parts to keep vintage mopeds on the road.

I sold every last one of them, I have no moped stuff anymore, was a fun decade, but it got too consuming/much work.

Three scoots and a big bike here. Plus another scooter I'm building into a frankenscoot. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

With an added scoot to the stable I decided to change the title of this thread to The Virginian's Meanderings. I purchased this scooter to fill the gap between the 155cc Vespa and the 1,000cc FZ-10. The FZ-10 to me is pretty much and old man/woman's sport bike with an upright sitting position. The Vespa just works on many levels for me and will most likely outlive all others in my garage. The Xmax is a real treat for me to have a scooter that zips along comfortably at 70+ and will make a good companion for some of my scooting adventures.

I present to you the new Xmax.

That's about as new as you can get when I took delivery.

I have lots of scooting plans this spring and summer and I'll try to keep this thread updated with my pointless pictures and posts. Here are a few highlights that I have on my agenda this year. Some of you may know that i love history so I tend to pick a historic site to visit and turn a ride into a learning experience. I'm a huge Civil War and WWII fan, throw in some plane and train museums and I'm happy as a clam at high tide! Here's a peek of things to come, hopefully...

    - AmeriVespa, Vespa's granddaddy of them all events in Richmond (tons of pic from that event coming)
    - The Hunley, first submarine to sink a warship that forever changed naval history
    - Gettysburg, needs no introduction, that forever cemented America's outcome of the Civil War
    - Anteitam National Battlefield - The Bloodiest Day in American History--Hope for Freedom
    - Fredericksburg Battlefield - America's Battleground, https://www.nps.gov/frsp/index.htm Done 03/18/18
    - Harper's Ferry - A must see if you haven't visited before.
    - American Armoured Foundation, Inc. Tank Museum - A must see if you're a WWII buff
    - The Virginia Museum of Transportation - They are supposed to have a decent train museum and I want to see and possibly ride the famous Virginia 611
    [IMG]

    - I'll be headed back to OBX come early September so look for the usual beach stuff there
    - Late September I'm off to Hawaii (never been) and hope to rent a scooter and see some of the island that I'll be staying on

I'll share my thoughts on the Xmax vs. the 946 as we go along. If any of you good folks have any specific questions or pics you need, just ask away and I'll get you some answers. This thread is about life, nothing more, nothing less. I welcome any and all folks to chime in. I'm just a VA redneck trying to enjoy what's left of my life and wish to share my adventures with the m/c and scooter community. So post your thoughts, pictures, jokes and climb aboard.

Just remember! Don't poke fun at scooter riders. If you mess with one, you mess with the whole trailer park! ;)

    Are you kidding Eric?

You've worked your azz off and paid your dues in life, you're at a point of 'what the hell'. If it don't work out, you sell it, loose a buck or two, and go buy something else.

Really looking forward to your scooter travels!! I'm sure loving the whole history aspect of all that's to come, you've got so much that you can grab on the eastern seaboard. We in the west, we're too new, no 'real' history out here.:scratch

On the Hawaii trip, which island? Is a Pearl Harbor stopover part of the visit?

Riding season is here my friend, sure looking forward to what you have in store to share with all of us!

You are very kind Sam, thank you. I'll be staying in O'ahu and don't plan on island hopping, so yes Pearl Harbor is on the "must do" list.

I've only been to O'ahu once, only to see Pearl Harbor, speechless.:( ...usually go to Maui or Big Island.

Try to make a trip to Zippy's, that's where the locals go. http://zippys.com/

Renting a Scooter while on Oahu is a must. I did it many years ago and it planted to scooter bug in me.

That pic was taken on Tantalus Dr. which is a must ride.

You do have a "way with words" my friend. You sent me the same message a while back and now I have a PCX sitting in the hanger and having a great time with it! A few years ago I did what I've come to refer to as "re-biking". Got rid of my BMW 1200GS, Harley Ultra Classic, my KLR650, and my wife sold her Goldwing 1800 trike. I then got a Triumph Tiger 800 XRX and a CanAm trike to ride two up (my wife doesn't want to ride her own bike anymore). Now I've added a Yamaha XT250 dual sport and the PCX. The Triumph may go away........... I'm already giving longing glances at the Vespa GTS's. Looks like I might be going into a new "re-biking" phase! :clap

I’ve never had a need for a Pin lock shield but I carry three shields, clear for night, light smoke for overcast days and dark smoke for sunny days. I thought I could get by with one shield and three inner or even just two but nooooo!

Eric, since you mentioned Hawaii, and I know your love of history. I had to consult my buddy Tony, born & raised on O'ahu.

    He said;

Pearl Harbor(which is already on your list)
    Iolani Palace
    Bishop Museum
    USS Missouri
    National Mem Cemetery-Punchbowl
Pali Lookout-an important battle place for King Kamehameha
Diamond Head, there is quite a hike up there.
    Polynesian Cultural Center

He also said be careful of the 'wildlife' roaming those beaches.:D

He also said a 50cc scooter traversing that island may be a bit of a challenge, if you can find more cc's, that'd be the way to go.

Hope this adds to your list!

    Aloha.

Another thing, if Huladog is out there, maybe he can chime in. He's a local.:wave
