Thinking about an airhead scrambler...

    I've done some work on airheads, an R100/7, R100RS, R100GS and I want to build a turnburner from a monoshock or paralever.

    I've got a line on several frames available.
    One fella has a monoshock frame and swingarm already powder coated and ready to go. Never had one o them...I've read the where one of the best handling Beemers.

    Hadn't really thought about using a monoshock frame, I was thinking R100GS or R100R frame, a 19" front wheel and maybe the K75 front end.

    I want to spend some time bracing it up, get a nice rolling chassis together then source an engine later.

    I'd appreciate some opinions and insight on what you guys might have to say about it all.

    The only problem with using a Monoshock frame is tracking down a g/s bevel box and wheels. If you cannot find them then you are stuck with cast wheels which spoil the look.

    I guess a twin shock would be the easiest option

    Nice looking bike, Rapid! I like!

    I am curious why anyone would change to pod filters and leave the stock airbox attached. I'd think for dirt duty one would prefer the stock filter.

    Rob, I agree, twin shock is probably the best way to go. I do like the looks of those tubeless wires though.

    Yeah. Im not looking for major modifications. I ride a real dirtbike in the woods now, and have the RS for road duty. I just like the idea of an airhead for cruising backroads at 40-50. Not a big fan of the bar end turn signals, and I have a high pipe already. I just need to finish my boat project before I take up the space with the bike project...

    i really like the high pipes but I can't figure out how to do this without it being very impractical. in that picture of the cool black scrambler, it looks like the pipe is right next to the fuel line. maybe it's the angle of the photo. I also wonder about it roasting your leg. really cool looking bike though.

    By 'bevelbox', you mean the final drive?
    I know where an R80 drive is available, along with the prepped R80 frame...

    That's pretty much what I have in mind elmoreman, but more streetafied maybe, kind of ST-ish.
    This totally works for me.

    www.gletter.de make repoduction parts for the ISDT bikes. Their exhausts tuck up behind the subframe. Drop them a line to see how much the pipes are.

    The benefit of the monoshock frame with the R1100 rear suspension
    is that you can use 2 into 1 pipes exiting on the left of the frame,
    allowing you to fit two full sized panniers.

    I saw a Guy from Europe touring South Africa recently with a combo bike that was a great compromise:
    A BMW R100 PD from the steering neck backwards and a KTM front end.:nod

    I wonder if the R80G/S hubs can be laced to R100GS crosspokes?

    I doubt it. The nipples on the cross spokes are fitted into the hub instead of the rim.

    But that's a paralever, not a monolever (R80G/S).
    The paralever R100GS already has crosspokes...

    I wouldn't go to the cross-spoke wheels if I had a monolever. I'd lace in some Accel rims instead - supposed to be some of the most rugged rims you can get. I heard a story of a group of guys all hitting the same obstacle in Mexico and the two without bent rims rode on Accels.

    Those cross-spoke rims are strong, but they've got their limits. If they bend, you're in deep doodoo, but regular rims can be repaired much more easily. Also, those cross spoke wheels are lots heavier than any others. They certainly look cool, and I like them, but they're not necessarily the absolute best.

    Ever notice how many guys laced 'normal' rims to their cross-spoke hubs?
