High desert in the fall on thumpers. :thumb It doesn't get much better than this. After last years ride that I planned: 700 miles in two days Three Forks-Trout Mtns and the Steens
I wanted to get into Nevada and explore some of the mountains that I've always looked at to the south while riding in the desert of Idaho/Oregon. I always look down at those mountains and think: "There has got to be some great riding and scenery down there". This was the year I would make it finally. Now I'm already planning next years ride to get even further into Nevada. :evil

The beginning. There were originally 7 people planning on going with me. A few days before the ride that number was down to 4. I got to the meeting place and Kent on a KLR650 was the only one to show up. Bob on a DRZ400S was taking a different route to the first nights camp.

Kent and my DR650 in Succor Creek Canyon.

We rode dirt most of the way to Jordan Valley. Gassed up and headed for the North Fork of the Owyhee River. Sunset just before we dropped into the canyon.

The campground at the North Fork Crossing.

Got out of camp about 8:30 Friday morning September 25th. A lot of nothing out there, I love it!! :thumb I'm a desert rat, I can't help myself. :D

We were headed south over Juniper Mountain towards the East Fork of the Owyhee River. A bit dusty. 85 to 90 degrees forecast for the weekend. Not a cloud in the sky for the whole ride.

    More wide open spaces.

    Here comes Kent.

    Followed by Bob.

And here comes the East Fork canyon.

Last time I was out here was about 10 years ago on a XR400R. I remember the descent being kinda nasty and the return ascent being even nastier. This time we were on fully loaded dualsports. At least we won't have to go back up right? :dunno Well, that is dependent on making the Owyhee River Ford. Here is Bob pondering the descent.

    Part of the descent.

    More to come. :evil

Thanks for posting! Looks like a great ride. I go by that area when I go to visit relatives in SW Idaho, but alway in a car. Planning to take my bike next time, but don't think I will be venturing off the highway much...but one of these days I will.

We made it down to the river at Crutcher Crossing. There used to be a cabin here. It burned down a few years back in a range fire.

    Look at that blue sky.

Where is the ford? Not here.

    Here is the ford. :thumb

I made it to the other side. :ricky

As I was waiting for Kent and Bob, a few fighter jets from Mountain Home Air Force Base started play fighting over the canyon. It was very impressive being down in that deep canyon with the sound echoing off the rock walls.
In this photo you can see one of the flares they were shooting.

And here is a video of it. You can't see the planes, but if you turn your volume way up you get the effect.

Okay, the air show is over. Here comes Kent and Bob to ford the river. No problem as it was less than a foot deep.

After the East Fork Owyhee Ford we climbed out of the canyon to the plateau. Not too far down the trail we find the South Fork Owyhee at The 45 Ranch.

    This was another easy ford.

    Headed out of the canyon.

Coming up this hill I was in the left track and was thinking I hope I don't catch a rock hanging out of the side of the hill on my soft bag. About 10 seconds later I came past a sagebrush and saw a sharp rock aimed right at the bag. Boink! :uhoh I stopped at the top and surveyed the damage. A nice surgical quality cut about four inches long. No pics of it. I got a piece of color matched black duct tape from Bob to keep the dust out. To be continued.......

Hiya Katy! :wave It actually turned out for the best that there were only three of us on the ride. Some of the stuff we ended up riding would have made some people want to mutiny and lynch me I think. :lol3 Three was just perfect for this ride.

Next up is the Star Valley Ranch. This is way out in the sticks. If something happened to you here, it's a long, long way to civilization.

And over the hill to Three Corners we go. :ricky This has been on my bucket list for quite a while. Finally made it. :thumb

    Oregon

    Nevada

    Here is the informational plaque.

Daniel G. Majors must have been one tough SOB. He was out here in December 1867 surveying!!! :dood How tough that must have been. All we had to worry about out here was whether we could make it to the next gas station and to be sure and make it to the restaurant before closing time. :beer

Looking east near Three Corners. See anything out there? Me neither. :thumb

Now we were headed to the Santa Rosa Mountains in Nevada. There they are to the West.

We got to see some wild horses.

More to come, I'm only half way through Friday.

    Nice report!!:thumb

I've often wondered about the winter exploring they did back then. I'm starting to think they did that because snow is water. I don't know?:scratch

Back atya :waveEd. Glad you had a good time. Something would have vibrated off Elsie prolly. Stuff keeps falling off, cracking, or breaking. Must be something to that vibration notion. :shog
