this is EXACTLY what I needed to read today. I am determined not to put hard cases on my S10. I just traded a 2010 GSA and I kept getting caught between the cylinder heads and the aluminum panniers. Its a curse of being tall and lanky. I become unhinged in the dirt and tend to fly where the bike spits me. Seeing your bikes loaded up with soft gear and hard top cases generated a thumbs up on my end. Excellent read with fantastic pictures.

Talked to Matt today for the first time since we got home from the trip.
They retired and sold their house and are moving to Placerville, Calf.
I hope to meet up with him half way and do some riding again some day.
Anyone out in the Placerville area need a great guy to do some hard core rides with needs to look him up.
I see Joey all the time being my son-in-law.

    Steve

    PS
I just got home from another great trip if you want to check it out.

Well as usual I'm late to the party just read your RR through a link. Awesome adventure thanks for sharing. I'm planning a 24 day trip up this summer July/August and if I can experience half of what you did it will be a huge success. I learned a lot.

    Stay safe,
    Irons

Great RR! I am going back to Alaska in 2018, 10 years after my first real adventure trip there in 2008. Your report has inspired me to explore!

You guys have a great trip that are heading up.
There is a lot more to explore up north than I ever see in ride reports.
If you scan the roads and trails on Google Earth you can find all kinds of good stuff.

Great report, and thanks for the link, eemsreno.

I feel like many of us with the good fortune to be able to ride up to these areas from the lower 48, nevertheless feel constrained by time or resources to just get up to some iconic end-point, and turn around the head back. You're really giving a sense of what it's like to have more time and a different outlook, and *really* get off the beaten track.

    Thanks!

Wow. I was up there in 2012 and had a similar experience to what you had in 2011. Going back next year to ride through to Tuk.

I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope that you just had an unusual experience with the traffic.

Yes, in 2011 My son and I felt like the Dempster was our favorite road on the trip.
In 2015 Matt and Joey really didn't seem to care for it. "To much traffic" But we had just come off the North Canol that is very remote and scenic.
I am very interested in the ride up to Tuk. I hope we can ride right up to the Arctic Ocean and no $70. rip off by some oil company.

I don't know how I missed this report. Probably the best Alaska adventure I've read on ADVrider. Muchas Gracious!

All along I'm thinking man these guys did some serious route planning and GPS track research to find all those cool remote places. Then I realize they didn't even have a GPS! Love it . Good old fashion paper maps and local intel. That's old school!

I have to agree, riding the Telkwa Pass is definitely not for the faint of heart and should never be attempted alone.I lived in Terrace for almost thirty years, did the pass once and swore never again.
