Tiger 800 Windshields

    Borrowing from Parallel Universe it seems a good idea to start a thread devoted strictly to windshields for the T800 so we can have a one stop place to compare all the different after market offerings starting to emerge.

    I'll launch it with the Madstad adjustable touring wind shield. I've been a beta tester for several weeks and they are ready, in fact I am the proud owner of the very first production unit.

    It's a three part system. A black power coated metal "fly screen" is attached to the existing mounting points using custom made brackets. The Madstad adjusting brackets bolt to the fly screen and the plastic windshield is mounted to these brackets using four tool-less T-bolts.

    Features are:

    Screen is fully adjustable-up, down, and tilt. No matter what your size, you can make it fit perfectly.

    There is a slot created between the fly screen and the shield, resulting in a very good laminar flow effect. Smooths out the flow over the top of the shield and no vacuum behind the screen.

    The plastic shield can be taken off in under a minute with no tools for off pavement riding. The Madstad brackets can also be taken off (four easy to reach bolts but you need a hex wrench and a 10mm open wrench, both supplied) and you are left with a fly screen that nicely protects the instrument pod.

    Several shield designs and sizes are available.

    Should be no problem with hand guards. I have the Triumph ones and there was a ton of room to share even with the widest shield on.

    There will be optional lower deflectors available in the near future. The T800 design is such that a lot of air is scooped up in the tank area. I have first prototypes on my bike and they work extremely well in blocking the low air. They are not really necessary but will be highly desirable for high speed touring and winter weather.


    Now for the best part; How does it preform?? One word, Great. There is no turbulence in the all important helmet area. I have tested it up to 80 mph with my face shield up, in fact I usually forget to close it under normal riding conditions. The whole rig is very stable, no jiggling, shakeing etc.

    Price is around $300, (Last I heard)

    I am 6'0" 31" inseam. The screen below is a 20" standard. It is set a inch or two higher than it needs to be for the wind to clear my helmet, but we are in the middle of our semi annual "love bug" infestation. At the height shown, it's at my moustache level and I can see over it quite well.

    I almost went for the Calsci for $125 but I figured I'd wait to see what Madstad had to offer. $300 is a bit steep.

    Madstad sorted the Tiger 1050 also, no doubt, he has the 800 figured out as well. Enjoy.

    There are now numerous aftermarket screens available for the Tiger 800; Madstad, Givi, Skidmark, Palmer, MRA and Calsci.

    I did my report on the Madstad, anybody else got a new one and want to share their experiences ?

    Surely not everybody on Advrider likes the stocker. :D

    Put the tall cal-sci screen on and it has helped alot. I've heard a few have had some problems with the side braces cracking but after 1500 miles my screen is working a treat. All though when I put it on I added a few washers to space the side mount out away from the speedo cause it was rubbing. I would offer up a picture but I broke my camera. But I think it look's good. I'm 6ft and seat is on high.

    I've got the Triumph Adjustable Touring Screen on my 800 XC and it works perfect for me. I'm 5'9" and at highway speeds it's nice and quiet with no buffeting. It's a little bit tall off-road, even adjusted down, but not so much as to cause any major problems. MUCH better than the ridiculous BMW Touring Screen on my F650GS, which directs airflow right at your head and isn't at all adjustable. All in all, quite happy with the Triumph screen.

    +1 I have this screen also it works well. Actually, the stock screen is better for summer; but the tall screen eliminates helmet buffeting for my wife as pillion.

    I've added the Laminar Lip to the Triumph Tall screen and it keeps my entire helmet in calm air. I suspect it would be just as effective on the standard screen.

    I'm looking for a wider screen tobetter protect so my shoulders and upper arms from the cold winter air here in South Florida! Damn, I've become a wimp!!!! Seems the Givi screen may better fit my needs, it about 2 inches wider.

    I had the CalSci short on for a few hundred miles and although it was a little smoother and quieter than the stocker I just like the looks better with the stock shield.
    Also had a MRA spoiler on the stock screen that worked well also, may use it again in the future.

    Looking forward to trying Jerry's old screen pictured above:clap I fear, it may not do what I want, but hey what the heck.

    For some data, I'm 6'1", 32" inseam so I have a long torso. Currently, I have the standard screen on my bike with the adjusters. I found the adjusters pretty much useless for me since the only setting is the lowest that keeps the buffeting down. Otherwise, I find it acceptable. Frankly, it's the best stock set up I've ever had. It is, however very LOUD.

    I don't want to end up with a big barn door like a madstad, but I may end up there. Then again, once I see the calsci on my bike, I just may conclude that I just put what I didn't want on my bike! The dreaded barn door! Doesn't look toooo bad in photos though, but we'll see live and in person:wink:

    I've had the Madstad on now for 6 months and 8,000 miles. It's working great and shows no signs of wear. Just returned from a 2,000 mile trip up to Tennessee where the morning temperatures were close to freezing and it it was sure good to have that thing blocking the arctic blast. With the shield set high, my Gerbings liner and gloves, and the engine warming my feet and legs, I was actually quite comfortable.

    He is now shipping it with the "winglets", or lower deflectors that extend the shield down and help divert the wind that comes from under the shield and hits you in the chest. I modified mine for the winter by bolting on some clear plastic extender plates so now there is no direct air flow hitting me anywhere except on the legs and exposed arms. I was running at 75 mph for long stretches with one hand on the bars, face shield up and listening to tunes from the ipod. :clap

    Next project is some bolt on extenders for the OEM hand guards

    I'll throw in my vote for the Madstad.

    I now know what relative peace and quiet can be like on a motorcycle. I don't think I can ever be without good laminar-effect windscreen going forward. Perhaps it's an over-50, ease-into-the-touring-bike thing :lol3, but I'll be choosing sanity over vanity from now on.

    Been riding for 35 years and never had a proper windscreen - just small quarter cafes, sport bike, and dual sport postage stamps. All have made me more than happy to revert back naked bikes. I've also had a Laminar Lip on a R1100S and I have the Adjustable Screen Mechanism for the standard T800 screen - both did little to nothing, IMHO.

    Giving the huge range of adjustability of this screen, it's really hard to go wrong, except if you can't stomach the price or the looks, I guess.

    all of mark's shields are avail. in all 4 colors.

    I have tried all of those tints on other bikes and the light gray is by far my favorite. It's barely noticable but It cuts road glare and you can see through it in all conditions. The darker tints look good but block a lot of your view of the road out especially at night.

    Can someone post some clear pictures/dimensions of the madstad brackets ONLY? I have some from an old bike. I'm wondering if they're the same.
