Beautiful view alongside the Manistique River Saturday monring:

We then headed to Grand Marais, then east on dirt. Horrible bad sand for a big bike. We did find some decent two tracks along the way:

Lunch in Pine Stump Junction. A herd of pirates pulled in just before we left. Several guys walked around the 990 looking at it like "what is THAT?" "Hey I dont see any chrome on it":

    Then on to the falls.

    IMG_20170624_162130902.jpg
Then on to Three Lakes National forest campground to set up camp, and enjoy, you guessed it, S'More S'Mores. Not long after that, it started to pour down rain through most of the night.:

We did get a nice walk in by the lake as well.

As it was still raining Sunday morning, we headed into Strongs for breakfast. This beauty of a Triumph was in the diner! The food was fantastic.

    IMG_20170625_093156001.jpg
Then onto some dirt, generally working out way sort of south, sort of north, sort of well, we rode around. Some of the roads were big and wide, others not so. In some areas a very course rocky gravel is used - makes the bike dance around a lot!

A bit of mud. The rut I was in was surprisingly deep.

    IMG_20170625_123600395.jpg

Then finally south of the bridge, and on to home. Great weekend!

Ok...looks like I will post up another little ride to nudge all you Tip of the Mitt Wanna Be, gee, I talk about riding, but dont actually ride, riders into maybe doing some riding!

Rather last minute, last weekend my wife and I decided to take in a bit of the UP Adventure trail. We headed north on Friday after work. I really didnt expect to get going as early as we did, so we ended up heading north on the route, getting up towards Strongs. the UPAT tracks are split into those appropriate for the small DS bikes, or has by passes for the Big Bikes. Long story short, we ended up on some of the DS trail that most would not say is not Big Bike appropriate. I was kinda shooting for a campground I spotted on the GPS, and knew we were approaching two culverts that I had read could be a bit tricky.

Some fun, big bike appropriate two tracks:

selfie time...me and my best riding buddy: IMG_20170707_190728914_BURST000_COVER_TOP.jpg

We then came across these sticks sorta blocking the trail - and if you look at the next pic closely, you can see where someone scraped into the ground the words "deep water". Of course, we could not turn around without seeing what this was all about.

The GPS said we were approaching the first culvert...sure enough.....

The GPS said we were approaching the first culvert...sure enough we found it. Going down it looked not to difficult for the fully loaded 990. I evidently decided I was confident of getting back up it....

    IMG_20170708_092926984_HDR.jpg

    Going down..... IMG_20170707_195349270.jpg
Now onto the second culvert to see what this alleged "Deep Water" was all about. Guess what...it was deep! I stuck a stick in at a spot I could reach - at least 20", and I could clearly see that was not the deep hole - I guess it was about 30" or more. We decided to turn around.

    IMG_20170708_091130014_HDR.jpg
So we back tracked a little bit and set up camp. The mosquitoes were HORRIBLE. But we slept well.

The next morning we loaded back up and headed back towards St. Ignace so we could head west on the UPAT. I would find out if I was over confident in getting back up that culvert!

First - I added a couple more bits of log to help out....
    IMG_20170708_093123406.jpg

Then it was the deciding moment...would we both die of starvation, permanently stuck between the deep water and the culvert....or would we make it out alive......

You guessed it...I made it up and over easily. In fact I was so blazing fast, Sheila missed the shot - only grabbing one after I was past it. She said it was fun to see the front end of the 990 in the air....

We didnt get many pics during the day on Saturday. We followed the Big Bike UPAT route ending our day north of Manistique about 22 miles. We camped in a National Forest Campground located along M94, very close to the route. Nice spot - kinda close to the road such you could hear traffic. the bugs were not bad at all at least.

It rained a bit on us Saturday night - not much though. In the morning we followed the UPAT as far as Rapid River. We stopped at Jacks Restaurant in Rapid River for a late breakfast - great food! I highly recommend it. there is a neat metal sculpture place next to the restaurant. Some creative, if not slightly disturbing appearing stuff...

From Rapid River we headed down to the Peninsula Point Lighthouse, took in a little bit of gravel there, then headed home on the long boring slab dab across US 2. All in all a fun weekend. So...I expect to see some posts from some rides from other Tip of the Mitt riders....get out and ride!

Not unless you live south of US 10. Riding has been banned north of there.

Uh Ohh, ya got me. I'm one of those that sit here reading the ride reports and stare at my three dirt worthy bikes. Can't get over the "Adventure in Ohio" pages: those guys really live to ride (together). I'm over here in Beulahland waiting for someone to get together for breakfast and a (short) ride, but am too lazy to initiate one. (if the wife would let me, HA). Don't trust myself (healthwise) to go out by myself as I don't dig deep sand - smallest bike being nx650, but really SHOULD get out of this garage and RIDE. Keep shaming us to get into the saddle and maybe we will rise up. Great POSTS by the way.

Wow - there are some riders out there! Good news.

So we need to set up a meet and great sometime in August perhaps. I am not around next weekend (racing the 41 year old Penton the Jackpine Enduro!). One of the first two weekends in august might work on my part. Beyond that, its into mid to late September.

BlueHeart, Bumpedmyhead - you out there? Haar, Padilen, what works for you guys? Motochron is in I am sure.

Im thinking Gaylord to meet up?
