Tire delema

    Hey all... So I had a set of Woody Wheels built for my 990 Adv with the rear being tubeless now. I just got a set of TKC80's and it appears the rear is a tube type. I thought I was getting a tubeless but didn't and no one has a tubeless that I can find in the US.

    Can I run this tire without a tube? I can put a tube in but then I screw up my new tubeless rim and would have to send it back to Woody to re-seal. If I do that I would rather run the D908.

    I got these for a Baja trip and am only hoping they last long enough for the trip. Probably 2000 miles total.

    Most reports seem to say TKC's are too soft of sidewall for the rocks of Baja anyway.

    606 front 908 rear. Oops, just checked them and they are both "tube type"

    No opinion on running them tubeless. I usually trust the engineers over opinions. Must be a reason.

    In response to your question, rather than just telling you to go buy new tires, yes I run tube type tires in a tubeless application all the time and it works fine. Right now I am running a 606 front an 908 rear tubeless an also a Michelin trials tire with a DOT legal Kenda front knobbie all tubeless an they all hold air just fine. Run it.

    I will be very surprise if it doesn't but you can always add a touch of slime to be sure.

    I run other rear tires tubeless on a similar setup (the mefo is a tube type, I think). It was a bit harder to seal the first time, but after the first ride it was fine. I think I added a couple psi every 2 days on a long trip- something I could easily do with a hand pump in 20 seconds kind of thing.

    Brent, aren't you running a tubliss brand setup? or do you have plain old sealed rims too?

    Yes I am running Tubliss brand system but it doesn't change that the tire has to do the sealing.

    No air loss at all after sitting overnight. :clap

    I don't know if running a sealant is a good idea or not with the sealing tape that Woody's used. I was thinking Slime or Ride On but Who knows...

    I'm not familiar with the sealing tape that Woody uses, but on my mountain bike using the Stans kit you seal the rim with tape. Been running the same tape for a couple of years with no issue. The one down side to Stans is it will dry out over time, especially in hot conditions and has to be refreshed. I do it through the valve stem after removing the core. Remember, I'm talking about a mtn bike. The theory should be the same for a motorcycle though.

    I know some guys who run the Tubeliss brand system on their dirt bikes and also run Slime in the tire to get a good seal and deal with road/trail hazard punctures.

    What is this sealing tape? I'm putting together some spoked wheels now and I'd like to go tubeless if possible. Have heard of using RTV but tape seems like a better idea.

    I'm not sure what the entire process entails. I had Woody's build the wheel and do the sealing. They did the rear only due to no safety bead on the front wheel. From what I can tell from looking at it, it looks like some clear wide tape like 3M paint protector stuff or something.

    I have seen kits on ebay for doing this and it may be the same thing. I think Woody's seals the spoke nipple as well with Goop or something. I have had this setup for about a year and it works perfect so far. I "seem" to be getting longer tire life as well but that could be in my head. I manly did it due to problems getting the tire bead to seat while out on the road. Now I plug it and go.

    Oh, ok. I was thinking that the little high pressure tube locked the tire to the rim and sealed it that way some how.

    I've avoided running sealant in my tubeless tires just because I thought it would make plugging the tire more difficult if I did get a big hole in the tire.

    Hey all... So I did about 2000 miles on my trip and the tire held air just fine. It still has a bit of tread but left but not a lot.
