TKC's or MT90's for a 3000 mile asphalt trip?

    I'm taking my 950SE down to the Mex/Guatemala border doing all asphalt on the way down there (unfortunately).
    Once down there, I will probably put more dirt oriented tires on for riding and exploring.

    I have heard lots of good things about the TKC's, but the wear rate is pretty quick. Other than that, they would be my first choice.

    Any case, looking for feedback from inmates with experience on these types of tires.

    I like the stock tire for the asphalt its last a long time. Not bad off road if you air down to 22 psi single track hard dirt.:rofl

    This is for the Adventure, not the SE, but it will give you and idea:

    I'd go with the Scorpions.. For onroad, they are way better than the TKC's, and almost as good offroad (don't get me wrong, the TKC's still aren't good for loose or soft offroad).. They also last longer. They're more expensive though, especially the ones with "V" speed rating.. Also keep in mind, that the ADV has a 150/70-18 rear wheel instead of the SE's 140/80-18.. So.. the wider rim on the ADV comes in handy when riding onroad. I don't know if the 140/80-18 Scorpion is as good on the SE, as the 150/70-18 Scorpion is on the ADV.

    To tell the truth about the TKC and K60, etc. "dual sport" tires.

    They aren't really good for either purpose.. The MT90 is however the best compromise (if you ride mostly onroad, maybe some light "offroad"). IMO the MT90 is the best "dual sport" tire for onroad - well I don't count the Conti trail attacks as a dual sport tire, sorry.

    The best to do is to have an offroad oriented tire (or wheel) set - with proper knobbies installed on them, and an onroad oriented tire (or wheel) set - with proper onroad tires, or at least MT90's on them.. That's the only way to go if you want the best performance both on- and offroad.

    But then some have reported high speed wobble problems with the MT90 front - never happened to me..

    just did 1,400+ on my mt-90's and am very happy with their performance. i started with a half worn tire and ran it with too low of pressure which was not good. i was fully loaded, 2-up and pretty much ruined the tire on the 3rd, 200 mile day, granted it wasnt in the best shape to begin with. i replaced it with another in St. George, UT and put in the right amount of air (40 PSI) the tire did awesome and had no heat related issues. this was in 100-112 degrees weather coming all the way from southern utah to tucson averaging over 80 mph. tire still looks new.

    Yes, it is all compromises. I have run both the 140 and 150 Scorp on my SE, not much difference onroad but the 140 is better off I think. The scorp front will suck all the fun out of your trip if you try to use it for dirt. The TKC front is a decent compromise (use with scorp rear), will work in dirt and get u there and back. Best is your plan to switch to something like a Rallyrace front or Dunlop when down there, that is what the SE is for. Personally, I would have a Super Explorer on the rear. You lose a little bit of cornering traction if you want to run a canyon but again, more fun, will last the trip, and better offroad.

    TKC won't last that long, total waste of money. MT90, K60, or Mefo whatever you can get cheaper.

    Unfortunately I cant get aroundnhavingmto do a 3000 mile slab section before I can start having fun. I dont have the option of having a dedicated set of road wheels. Yet.
    So, just looking for best performing 50/50ish tire that will last me the trip down here and give good traction, specially on wet asphalt.
    From there, I will get a proper set of knobbies.

    I have run the super explorer before, but it doesnt have good grip in the wet, I think. I ran them to Morocco and back (from Spain) and they got decent mileage. Thats about it.

    I cannot comment on the TKC, but if you sway towards MT90 simply forget it in favour of the Sahara Enduro 3. I'm talking rear tyres. Way better than the MT90 on asphalt (similar mileage but with way better grip and more gradual slidding) and very similar off-road. Expect 6k miles on the SE with lots of spinning and associated hooliganisms.

    K60 rear / TKC front.

    Watch out if you hit any wet weather - the K60's are terrible in the wet, and the TKC isn't stellar either. But for hot droning on the highway the K60 is tough to beat. The TKC front will be much better offroad and will most likely last at least the life of the K60.

    *disclaimer: I haven't tried that combo. I've had TKC's and K60's but always as matching sets. I won't ride with the K60's anymore due to the wet weather performance, and I don't like the fronts at all. But for long distance in the dry, the rear is really good for 80% of everything.

    This is right IMO. The rear just pushing, the front is steering, You don't want to have to jack around with tires during your vacation.

    I've got a buddy with a BMW 800GS and he can't stand TKC80 front tires. He runs the TKC 80 rear with a Karoo 2 front.

    Would there be any reason to go with a 80/100 front and a 150 vs. the standard sizes?

    The other option is to go for trail attacks for 100% road and 908 once I get there:rofl

    If you are just stamping down pavement just use a good pavement tyre and try and enjoy the ride a little better, as you say new boots when you get there :clap.

    At least if you get something pretty good on the tar like the MT90 you can step it up and fling it through the twisties for at least some giggles, that way you can make the most of what you are being served up.

    Just to throw out another thought, I put on a Pirelli Rally on the front at the beginning of this season. I don't mind the Scorpion on the rear, but I never feel comfortable with the Scorpion on the front in the loose stuff. I did one trip with this setup so far -- 250 miles across the state on pavement, 280 miles the next day on gravel and dirt, and then 250 miles back the next day in torrential rain. This setup performed pretty well in every environment, and the Rally front appears to be wearing well for the amount of pavement that it's seen. FWIW.

    I've got over 1200 pavement miles on my T63 front and I can barely tell it's worn. I'll snap a pic when I get off work. I took a pic when it only had 300 miles also.

    We are running the MT21 Rallycross and love it, last one lasted 10647 km and was still tractional when taken off although spent.

    I little less speed on the tar cornering etc but shingle roads plus it is great.

    I'd run a t63 front and a d908 rear. No need to change that rear only after 3000 miles! These things are just getting broke in by 3000. Either that or a cheap Shinko 140-18 rear. Throw it in the bin when you're done kinda tire.:freaky
