I just finished a week ride on my s10 through Arizona. Grand canyon south on hwy 191, over to tombstone, Bisbee to Tuscon up to Havasu Vegas and to St George, man I loved the power difference at below 1000ft, you low landers are lucky. I can ride the s10 much longer than my Tiger without monkey butt, my wife likes it better also.It's not smooth like my triple but I'm going to be very happy with it until yammy comes out with a triple in an adv bike..
Buy one I might buy my second...
GSDonovan, congrats on the GS purchase, I was a little surprised given your previous comments. What was it that changed your mind? Previous GS ownership? The S10 not match up well with you? Are you going to keep the Multi? Have fun on your ride home, try to keep the engine loads varied!

Like the OP, I am similarly considering either the 2014 Super Tenere or the 2014 GSA and possibly the MG Stelvio or Triumph Tiger Ex. The ST and the GSA are the top contenders though.
I am seeking some confirmation on price though. If my research is correct, it seems like the 2014 GSA, with full options is going to cost around $26K OTD, versus the Yamaha at $17K OTD? This would be either bike configured with OEM side cases and the top case all with inner bags. The GSA gets the Navigator and the Yamaha gets the Engine Guards.
Am I missing something on the price for the Yamaha, or is it really $9K less?
It is really a lot less. If you shop around a bit you might be able to find one for even less. Ping Pluric, he's also in SLC and might be able to suggest a dealer.
I'm also considering the S10. I've only ever ridden metric cruisers, but want a reliable travel bike for long weekend, rainy days, and general commuting. I was looking at the BMW GSA. I sat on it and found it very comfortable, but I'm just not comfortable spending $24k+ on a bike, especially since I'm not a world traveler (yet).
My local dealer has a white '13 leftover they're trying to part with. I assume the pricing is pretty close to what others have reported (~$12k). I could EASILY swing that.
I just have one hang up right now about it (other than my wife ). The '14 model has an extra horse or two, a few improvements here and there, as well as the option for ESA. Everything I've read tells me that the ESA is well worth the extra $1,100 (total msrp of $16k).
So my question for those of you who have ridden both, or are just intimate with the S10:
Is the 2014 price worth the ESA option vs going for a much cheaper '13?
Is the ESA even an issue? (ie, easy to change by hand?) I feel like for my mostly road needs the ESA would be a nicety, but not worth $4k price difference between '13 and '14. Are the other '14 improvements worth the markup?
I'm currently 340lbs (slowly moving my way down the scale thankfully). I'm also going to be primarily a street rider, with a few gravel roads / fire trails thrown in. We have a lot of off road opportunities here in Maine, but for me, this bike would more than likely be a long week/weekend trip bike, and a commuter (especially on the rainy days). I'm keeping my cruiser because it won't be redundant with an adventure bike. My office is 22 miles away, so I can rack up some serious saddle time each week and want something that is comfortable and reliable for commuting. My cruiser is a great bike, but I've customized to the point of being uncomfortable. No storage, tractor seat, etc.
To me, the biggest advantage of the '14 is cruise control because I do some long range touring.
ES is nice if you ride with varying loads, passenger? luggage? both? Me, I rarely carry a passenger and don't feel the need for ESA.
My recommendation for you would be to forget about the ESA, because of you weight. Get the standard model and upgrade the suspension to accommodate your weight and riding style.
I have been carefully considering the bike I will buy when (not if!) I return from Afghanistan (this fall hopefully). I started thinking the GSA was it but after reading of the issues with BMW and some time riding in remote places outside the US where a breakdown is disaster or worse - the end of the trip/bike the Yamaha for me is the only way to go. We too are going to be fully loaded with gear 2 up so will upgrade the standard to Ohlins and very stout springs for Mexico south.
Regarding pricing...today my Craigslist search all engine found a 2014 ST for 12,999 in California and I confirmed the price on another new one near Denver for 14,000. Given this discounting I will buy a new 2014 for all the little improvements.
This bike appeals to mature riders who simply want to ride a competent and strongly built bike without the mechanical worries...that's me...perfect fit...guess thats why I have always, unconsiously owned mostly Yamahas.
An excellent point! I won't be changing loadouts or riding styles often enough to warrant the ESA. I'll be 80/20 on/off at very most, always alone with minimal gear (few sets of clothes, basic necessities only, camera). My wife has her own bike and she refuses to ride backseat (that's okay, I don't know if I'd be comfortable with that anyway).
I'll probably wait a few months since the new ones seem to be found for much less than msrp anyway. I'd rather get a newer model year (cruise control and other slight improvements may be worth waiting a few months and an extra grand). I might do the fly in, ride out deal on one that's a few days away. Would make a perfect three day weekend excuse.
I owned a 2012 and now own a 2014. I traded to the the 2014 mainly for the cruise control as it's a very nice feature out here in the wide-open west. It wasn't even on my radar at the time, but the motor upgrades are a strong second to consider. All the other little upgrades are just a nice bonus. I have the base model, so can't comment on the ESA, but yes, adjusting the suspension manually is a doddle (easy).
That is only the purchase price...add in the cost difference of
services, maintenance, and repairs of the bmw vs yamaha. ...

Well I guess the Super Ténéré will have to be my next bike because I bought a 2003 R1150GSA from a fellow inmate instead. I figured, since it was my first bike, I should go for the Beemer and see if I like it, and the potential expense of maintenance and repair.
Definitely something to consider. I joined the list today since I am considering upgrade of my 2005 DL650 with a 2014 S10.
I also have a 2009 BMW R1200RT (purchased used in 2010). Wonderful bike but the maintenance interval for valve adjustment is 6K miles. There are other maintenance items that are "major surgery" that are required every two years. I haven't had any problems but maintaining the bike over 18K miles has been a lot more expensive than the 2004 FJR it replaced.
Well stated. I'm at this point as well, I have 54,000 on the 1200GS, great bike, hasn't let me down but even doing everything myself its a $150 oil change or $300+ for the 12K service!! Don't even add the cost of new suspension or clutch within the coming 20K miles. Throw in the uncertainty of the final drive of which I know personally know 5 friends that have had to either rebuild or partially repair theirs ($1500-$2500) and now you have something eating money and detracting from the enjoyment of riding.
Yes, the S-10 always ranks 3rd behind the big players but I bet if you add a reliability/cost analysts for owning it for 50K I'd imagine it's a slam dunk winner!
Beat out the Beamer and the KTM for overall title in 2012 according to Cycle World.
I do my own minor service so the cost of an oil change is not a factor. On my BMW boxer, a cam head, I do the valve checks. On my S10 I won't do the valves and the dealer coast for that job locally is in the $350-$500 range, so for me the S10 has a higher cost of ownership.
This months issue of Rider Magazine has a Adventure Shootout article with the S10, 1190 advR, and GS-LC. The results are as expected, best overall is the GS, best "sport bike" is the KTM. The s10 gets panned for poor throttle response/ engine management and being a bit porky.
In the end you should ride the one that puts a smile on your face, that's all that counts!

Ummm......yeah......no. 55k later on my 1200GS, every 6k, oil change + valves......if I do it myself that's $150, dealer $500. At every 12k it's the same plus all other fluids (transmission, final drive + oil change and valves)......if I do those myself $300. If the dealership does it $700-$900!!! I have receipts!
S-10......oil change at 6k. $100.......no valves until 26k!! Ummmm.......so explain to me how your S-10 costs more???
I just changed the oil on my R1.......filter and oil......easy, $60 using Amsoil. The S-10 is that easy too to do an oil change.......
