Anyone ever tried to remove these things for paint? The panels are in especially good shape but I would like to paint the entire tank. I assume once the emblem is removed there is some sort of double sided tape holding them down? If so maybe a heat gun and gentle pulling will allow them to come up even without creasing them? OR should I just mask them off?

I've done this. It's easy. There is no double sided tape or any kind of adhesive at all. The emblem screws hold the front side of the panels to the tank, and there is a slip-fit bracket holding the back on. You can't really mess it up - remove the two emblem screws, remove the emblems, and then slide the whole toaster panel gently towards the front of the bike and they should pop right off.

Apparently, reinstalling them onto new paint can sometimes result in scratches. Get some wax paper and put it in between the toaster panel and the tank when sliding the panels back on. Once on, remove the wax paper and you're set.

    Best of luck!

This is the bracket that lives under the cover.
Just slide the panel forward after removing the "roundels"
Don't over tighten the "roundel" screws, they will damage the enamel on the badges and are easy to strip.
