Trying to figure out what a fair price would be on this bike. The seller
hasn't come forward why the salvage tilte (other than bent frame)

    1991 BMW R100 Rare Vin Needs work - $2300

The Bike is an R100 Classic. A copy of the BMW US Sales Brochure is below. There are two different r100 models. The first is a dual shock that was sold from 1980-1984. The other is a mono shock that was sold in 1990/91 only. Around 200 were sold in the US and maybe Japan. The information that I have is that Chassis Numbers ran from 6419001-6419181.

    Mine is Serial Number: WB1046103M6419076

    The good:
    • My wife bought the bike and we are the only owners. If you need to know anything about it. I can tell you.
    • Bike originally came in Black. My wife had it custom painted and striped that creamy R1200C color and it's beautiful
    • Bike starts and runs well. No oil leaks.
    • New battery installed a couple days ago.
    • Approximately 30,xxx miles. . .Speedo show 43,xxx but it's from another bike.

    The Bad:
    • It's been sitting in the garage for about three years or so. Started every few months
    • Needs a major service and fluid changed
    • Salvage Title
    • Not registered but in legit non-op status.
    • The bike has been crashed a few times in its history. Both crashes had similar damage and I rebuilt the necessary parts to get it running both times.
    • Tank dented, front fender damaged

No test rides without cash on hand and M1

First thing, the following is entirely my opinion based on my wants/needs and general gut feeling. Pretty sure nothing I'm about to say is based on fact or any kind of market research or knowledge. :lol3

I've been shopping Airheads hot and heavy for the last several months and when I originally saw this ad several days ago, immediately thought I'd drop $2300 on it without batting an eye. A mono R100?!?! That would be an awesome relationship to enter into! I thought San Francisco was a bit far for me to attempt a fly-n-ride with a 20+ year old bike that's been sitting in the garage for three years, though. I've lived there twice and still have family and friends in the bay area, but there's about 3000 miles between them and home.

Salvage titles don't freak me out and I've ridden the wheels off of several such bikes. Occasionally, some repair need will pop up as a result but as long as there's no critical damage like a bent frame, meh. Buying an Airhead is committing to a lot of tinkering and futzing with the bike anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a one-owner bike. I can't recall the last time I ran across that. When I picked the bike up, I'd want some serious kitchen table time scheduled with the owner so I could pick his brain. Try to build a solid overview of the bike's life and tie the what/where/when parts together.

It may not be such a good deal if you're just looking for a cheap Airhead to flip. Looks like a substantial chunk of money may be needed to get it back in really good shape. I'm looking for a long term relationship, so that wouldn't be much of an issue with me. If it were within 2-300 miles of me, I would've already snagged it. :deal

So what would it be worth in good condition?

You could drop quite a lot of cash getting that tank straight, and there will doubtless be quite a bit of hidden damage under the paintwork of the previous crash.

Other damage could include bent frame, tweaked forks etc etc, did the owner buy the bike back from the insurance company, with the intention of rebuilding it, and then found out various hidden damage.

I would suggest part out value only. I would not attribute any value to the 'classic model" status

If thr frame isn't bent. Id go for it. Take a ruler, check the neck plates, do some rough measuring.

I got bit by a dishonest seller, sold me a bike that had a bent frame, I was semi noob. It won't happen again.
The mono r100 is sweet. Gs tank drops on easy (I test fit my gs tank on my r80 mono) I don't recall the miles on that bike, but surely it'd be part out-able at that price.

Otherwise, for a grand more or so, you could pick up something not needing all the work.

You have to kinda wonder how the tank got that banged up. Probably multiple events. The big engine put a lot of stress on the drive train if abused. Was the salvaged title due to flooding? Repairing/replacing a water damaged airhead transmission and rear drive is a costly undertaking. Prices on these bikes vary wildly by location. Check out Max BMW or Bob's BMW to see the cost of new parts. You definitely have to figure that into the total of what you want to spend.

They only made 163 of this model, It is by far the best airhead made. This one has been repainted as they were all dark grey metal. If you buy it I have an extra tank. I paid $2500 for mine and it had a couple dings in the tank, needed a rear tire, filthy and a ton of corrosion.

Here is mine in combat touring trim

I have a spare R100GS frame. My plans are to transfer all the parts to the GS frame (good title ) and run it as a super motard.

Kirk, If the bike doesn't have a clean set of papers, I wouldn't pay that for it. But that's just me.
Besides, there will be certain fitment issue here and there to GS frame. Gas tank for one.
It can be done, but requires a little caressing first.

no too worry about the frame. Talked to the seller. He lowside the bike twice.

More worry about the head being bent. Called Dick Sullivan who lives near there to do an evaluation for me. Like I said I have a clean title R100GS frame that everything would bolt right up.

Im think 1500 for the bike. The parts are worth that. I have a GS tank and R65 tanks ..that will fit . For the right price it might be worth it.

    Lets see....

If the owner is asking $2300 hes probably looking to get $2K. I'd offer $1800 cash and see what happens. That particular bike, with some time and $$ invested in it could be a great find.

I dunno about converting it to a GS though... I'd leave it as/is.
