Don't get into skating if you're not prepared to fall......
I'm glad this thread popped up. My 8 yr old wants to get into skateboarding and I have no clue about it. Do I take her to the local skate shop and get something decent or hit up Target? She's mentioned it a few times and would like to add it to the list of stuff we do together. I'm getting divorced and a good chance won't have primary custody so if we just do it when we get together that's fine.
My vote is for something decent. Target level could turn her off.
Only advantage I could see of a target board other than price is that maybe the cheaper bearings will make the board a little more stable while she learns. (wheels not spin as freely so board doesn't want to slip from under her.) But you could choose lesser bearings on a build too.
Also better gear at a real shop. Helmet and pads.
If you're talking about a street style setup, you should be able to do a quality complete board for sub 100$. I'd say drop into your local shop and see what they've got first. At 8 years old, she may also benefit from one of the smaller decks that are out there. Almost Skateboards has a few off the shelf completes: http://www.skatewarehouse.com/Almost_Youness_Batman_Dk_Knight_Mini_Complete/descpage-ALYBDCMP.html
She's definitely getting helmet and pads. I don't need to give her mother anymore excuses of why she shouldn't be spending time with me. Thanks for the info guys! I'll hit up a shop and see what they say.
i thought i was too old to get back into skating when my kids were old enough, i was early 30s, they were 5 & 3. best day was watching my youngest roll into the big pipe at Upland, everyone got a kick out of that. my worst day was breaking the ball off my ankle & removing my achillies in a parking lot.....or maybe it was snapping my tib & fib dropping into the shallow end at Upland....the full leg length hematoma i got playing skateboard football.......or maybe it was that concussion when i came off in the pipe that has made me loose all my short term memory?? ...shit, i can't remember...
have fun skating, but dont get stupid. you're old.
first few days with the new boosted board, tons of fun. Wow this thing can haul ass even with my lard bucket on it! cannot put it on the highest power setting the thing would do a wheelie! Ordered some shredlights so I can try some night time cruising.
Want one bad. Still behaving and haven't bought one.....yet.
The evolve gt looks pretty good too, the boosted is a blast, commuted almost 4 miles and was only on second lowest setting, need to get some open road to push it a bit. Control and braking is awesome
I'll have to check out the evolve but that boosted looks like the iphone of elec boards and the weight is more than reasonable too.
I still roll around the neighborhood occasionally. Haven't been to a park in years though.
My brother tested out a camera gimbal he got off a buddy a few weeks ago. I was reminded that I needed to spend more than 60 seconds warming up before doing any tricks
My brother and I have been kicking around making a carbon board which more accurately mimics the maple wood & resin movements. I've got some ZERO boards which have a carbon strip in them, but they don't feel right. I want to have the perks of carbon, while still having the feel of wood. We've got the blank the mold will be off of, but gotta get a few $ worth of silicone to make the tooling. Will be slow, but should be a fun process.
That was my reasoning, plus they are in the next town over, the customer service is pretty great as well. Should be for the cost!
You also get a coupon just now to save $200 off the extended battery when it comes out. 12miles before charging will make my weekend hill cruising much easier.
Cool set up Andrew, will be cool to see the progress.....
Just be careful with the ''hackers'' my brother in law broke his arm when his board stop with out warning, aparently is a phone app going around that let other people take control of the board (that was his explanation at least, no idea if is truth)
Is a shame I can not skateboard anymore, they are freaking intense, for example i got up to half of Twin peaks coming with the Haigh side (and i'm pretty ''dense'' at about 240L) chossing certain streets carufully (i know that area very well) but no matter what they are very step, super fun experiment.
They do warn about the system shutting down if over charged from riding fully charged and using the brakes as it could cause a motor stop issue, which should just cut the power. As long as the things doesn't lock on the brakes its fine, for me anyway as I don't push the speed anywhere i couldn't control if just freewheeling.
but like any throttle system it has risks I guess.
I am not a huge hill bomber.
Pretty much have to be ready for an instant stop on any skateboard. Never know when that piece of gravel or whatever will find your wheel and slam on the "brakes."
- Captain obvious out.
I learned my lesson on this on the first real hill I went to ride down when I was in 8th grade. Half way down I realized I was going pretty fast....and it was getting steeper. I figured I'd hop off the board and that would be that. I ended up supermanning down the hill in the rocks, grinding a hole on my hip. Still have the scars from that one
Yeah, fuck skateboards. I need to add them to the list of things that I hate...
The Moon...fuck the moon
Giraffes? nah man, lay off of the giraffes.
Double fuck humidity though. Fuck it to death in fact.
before I load it up on craigslist i figured I would offer my old board up for sale. PM if there is any interest I hate selling on Craigslist and would want it to go to someone whom would respect it. its a yellow Bill Tocco with gullwings and vision shredders.
I am not going to be able to use it anymore, bought it new in 1987
