I have just stumbled upon an app called Avenza.
It helps locate and download maps from a variety of sources.
It accesses geoscience australia topo maps. It looks like most are free with some of the more detailed maps have a small fee.
Its not a full mapping/gps software but for browsing maps I find it handy.
    No affiliation just sharing.

I use the app on my phone while on the bike.

Keep the avenza maps zoomed out to give me(the directionally challenged) a better idea of the big picture, and the Rino zoomed in for the turns. Works for me.
Once you've registered and purchased maps on your phone you can log in on a tablet and download the purchases to that aswell.

I converted my Raster Nat Map .ecw files and works well with the inbuilt GPS.

    it's good stuff !

to create your own geo referenced maps, from ANY image (take a picture with your phone, then tag locations on it compared to google maps) try out Maprika.

You can literally go from paper map -> picture -> hiking map... in just a few mintues. great for park maps on sign-in boards, and similar stuff :)
