trailer door spring

    I searched via google and didn't come up with anything, so here's the problem.

    My ramp door spring came unsprung. About the best advice I could find on the general internet was either not to do it, or be damn careful. And have the door up.

    so the door is up, and I wound the spring, or rather unwound it, so it was expanded back to where the set screws were originally. About 8 turns. Problem is, the damn door doesn't wanna open :huh I can push it a little. So I took a turn off and it was better but :dunno

    am I doing it right? should the door actually be down?
    I'll be stopping at HD tomorrow to get some proper steel bars. Alignment punches work, but are a bit sketchy :lol3

    You should be winding the spring, not unwinding it. And then closing the door winds it some more. Are you saying you can't open it once it's closed, or that now you can't close the door?

    can't open it once it's closed, as it is trying to unwind the spring further.

    I suppose if I do it with the door down I would want to unwind it? That is the only way I can see getting it back to the original marks on the rod.

    This happened a couple weeks ago, and I'm getting sick of having to lift that heavy damn thing every weekend :deal

    The spring should be under tension when the door is open and under more tension when closed. The spring is supposed to be helping you lift the door, then holding it open, but not so strongly that the door opens on its own.

    I think the first thing to worry about is why it failed in the first place.

    This is a drop down ramp door, not a garage style.

    Slight (some set amount) of tension in the up/closed position, and more tension in the open or down position. But, not enough to want to lift the door.

    It is a balancing act and the position of the fulcrum is needed. :D

    You wind the torsion spring with the door down in the open position. You can't wind it with the door up because the spring has to grow in length as tension is added.

    The spring has less tension in the closed position. As the door opens , tension is added to compensate for the weight of the door.

    My overhead door has coil springs. They're slack when the door is open and under full tension when the door is closed. The other way around would make no sense, because it would make the door more difficult to open, not less.

    after having wound it in the up position, having it down makes more sense. cant believe everything on the internet apparently :deal

    Never underestimate the kinetic energy stored in those springs. Always use rods that fit snugly in the winding holes and be very careful. It's easy to lose fingers and even part of a hand if you're careless. My old boss had it happen to him once, and he partially lost the use of his hand.

    Yep. I made sure to stand off to the side and not be in a hurry. I started with 8.5 winds, then had to put another 1.5 on. last couple got a little tough. Had I lost it, Im sure the bar would have gone through the front of the trailer
