Tony, A few friends and I are going to ride this the 23rd-25th. Starting at the North end and camping at Colton State Park night one. Thank you very much for the post. we did the "durtydabbers" out that way in the spring and fell in love with the area. we wanted to take out route 6 from Shawnee PA but their bikes aren't setup for paved so we are trailering out. What kind of distance did you average in a day? looking for a good camp site for Saturday night but we aren't sure what to expect distance traveled wise. Thanks again... ps-I have a used zumo but have never downloaded a track...I may need some advice but I'll give it a shot tonight first.

It's absolutely doable in 2 full days - you should have absolutely no problem doing it in 3 (as you intend). We had no problem covering a shade over 200 miles the first day, then the balance the second, and we were definitely not riding dual sports (a Ducati Scrambler and a KTM Duke 690). A link to our actual ride report is HERE.

Colton Point is way too short of a hop for the first leg (coming from the north), but other camping opportunities are numerous all along the route - but you will have to make advanced reservation. We didn't have this worry as we just "hoteled" it.

Bald Eagle State Forest is the rough mid-point and your best bet for camping. Motorized camping is allowed at approximately 40 designated locations throughout the Bald Eagle State Forest. These sites have a fire ring and off road parking. Camping is free, but a permit is required for those sites and is available from the district office - here is the contact info...

Let me know if you have any issues getting that track onto your Zumo - you shouldn't.

We did this track a few weeks ago on our way from NC to NY state. Very pleasant and easy ride on scenic dirt/gravel roads with proper paved connectors where applicable. We camped at Owens Creek near Camp David in Maryland; then hit this track leaving breakfast in Waynesboro; and made it up to Colton State Park early in the afternoon of the second day. I'll have a full ride report coming. I'd stitched together a set of tracks to get us from Maggie Valley NC to Maine but the tracks through VA were a lot slower going than we planned. The TPAT was a welcome easy cruising ADV ride after the challenges farther south. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience ADV riding for the first time as the terrain is easy and there are lots of "outs" off the track for anything you need from camps/hotels to repairs or food. And, the great thing for more seasoned ADV riders is that it goes right through the Seven Mountains trail system area just east of State College where you can leave this track and find all the technical and challenging trails you could ever want! Afterward, it's easy to reconnect to the TPAT.

Thank you for the feedback. We are looking forward to it this weekend. Camping in Colton on the first night and Tuscarora on the second. we will have two KTM 690's and one 950 if anyone is out that way this weekend. Thanks again.

When you get down to the southern end of the TPAT, go check out the South Mountain Creamery in Maryland. Best ice cream and chocolate milk in the state.

I'm sure there are a number of creameries that would disagree with my statement. They'd be wrong :) I have done most of the Maryland Ice Cream Trail but not all of it so I'll leave the door open that there might be another that's better.

Tony, Thanks very much for the route. I rode it last weekend on Fri/Sat (probably not the best time due to rain). I left around 11am on Friday and got to the start a little after 1pm. Stopped for the night in Millheim around 6:30ish then did the rest on Saturday from 6-11:30. There were a couple small detours of no real consequence, one of which put me onto a bike path driving with a bunch of (I assume) boy scouts. Only disappointment was the weather. I knew it was going to rain and frankly was surprised it wasn't when I woke up Saturday but I made it a couple hours before the rain started. Most of the unpaved was not really much worse wet except one part that seemed really soft and it felt like I was on sand and figured I was going down shortly. I had originally planned a whole nice route back but by the time I got to the end and checking the weather of basically rain all day I said F it, hopped on 15 South and was home by 3:30.

You're most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.

Would like to know more about the detours though - want to keep this up to date.

Sorry, not ignoring, went away for the weekend.

Here was one, the bridge over 220 is being rebuilt.

I'm not 100% sure (need to check my GPS track), but I'm pretty sure the other was here where they put you on the rail trail off of marsh creek road. I was riding my motorcycle along with what I assume were boy scouts bicycling on the trail that morning in the rain.

As I said, both were of no real consequence to the actual route.

    Thanks...

Since the first anomaly was the bridge rebuild, I would leave that as it wont last forever. As for the second, my track stays on CR 3027 (Marsh Creek Road) so it must just have been a GPS accuracy error that got you on the adjacent bike path.

    Good to know, though...

Oh no, that's what I was saying, there was an official detour and it put vehicular traffic on the bike path. As I said in the original, though, neither of them were any real detriment to the route as there were very small detours. Certainly nothing needs changing.

There's actually one other section I wanted to ask about but again I need to reference the track. I noticed there was a section that kind of went out of its way to loop around a small connecting road and when I got there I noticed what appeared to be a new bridge for the small section that was gone around so I was just wondering if that was done on purpose or because the bridge was out in the past. I'll get back to you on that one...

At the point where the bridge was being rebuilt, we rode down the entrance ramp, through the median, and back up the opposing exit ramp to continue onward. Probably not kosher but definitely expedient.

Nice addition to PA routes. The download for the original Trans PA Trail has some great Michaux routes you can use. it looks like you took a little more easterly route then I did coming up from Michaux. Nice job. Hope you people start riding these routes we are creating for everyone!

Tired this trip later last year.. Left from York and rode over. Got just passed 230 and 30, heading up towards Cleversburg, and sheered a front brake caliper mount bolt.. put a quick end to my ride... was all planned up with a 4 day weekend and excellent weather for camping.. Have to give it another go in the spring when I get some time.
