Transmission cooler lines

    My 1993 ford ranger tranny lines finally rusted out. Can I just replace the metal lines with rubber fuel line? What kind of pressure is in those lines?

    Where can I get some of the rubber tubing that they use to make the bend up to the cooler? It would be much easier to run rubber tubing than try to replace all the metal tubing.

    You can get transmission cooler hose at any good auto parts store.

    Fuel hose is not normally oil resistant and will swell.

    Makes sense.

    I did a little googling and it looks like it is recommended to put a flair of some type on the line because a regular hose clamp will not hold.

    Fuel hose and ATF transmission hose are different compounds. Fuel hose on a trans cooler will melt in about a day, maybe less. Use trans line for transmission and fuel line for fuel. That's all. Oh. The correct hose can take that pressure.

    You need to bead the end of the tube. I do it with my flaring tool. I start by setting the tube height in the block for a double flare and put the double flare button in the tube end. I then tighten it down just until there's a usable bead, not all the way. Use a small worm gear clamp, or two if you feel so inclined.

    Just did it to my POS 01 F150 this summer....

    Transmission hose from CARQUEST. Cut the rotted tubing cleaned up with 220 grit paper used fuel line clamps. So far so good. not much pressure in cooler lines.

    P.S. Carquest couldn't source replacement steel lines for system... Had to rig up something

    When you flush a tranny via the cooler line, it takes several seconds to pump a quart, and it doesn't come out with much force.

    My guess (and it's a total guess) would be that the pressure is less than 10psi.

    Back in the days in the rust belt the fitting at the radiator was often so seized that we just cut the metal line with a pipe cutter. 2 compression fittings and a new piece of steel line, that's what? 15 minutes work???

    Why not get a tubing bender and a flaring kit and make new steel lines? If your transmission lines rusted out, your brake and fuel lines probably aren't far behind.

    Those are all done in the last couple years. Tranny is the last one.

    You can NOT use rubber fuel line! The ATF will come apart inside in small pieces and trash the tranny. Go to a NAPA or Carquest type store and get 5/16 or 3/8 inch id. tranny hose and some #6 hose clamps. put two clamps at the end. Then you get no leaky!

    I decided to take on this project this weekend. The first big step was to clean the garage out so I could get the truck in.

    As I pulled the truck in the garage, the transmission lost enough fluid that it would not move anymore, I had to use a come along for the last 10'.
    Once I got the truck up in the air, I discovered the side tank on the radiator was leaking. :cry

    Next struggle was the lines at the transmission, there was no clearance to remove them. After a trip to NAPA, I picked up a crows foot wrench and I cut up one of my open end wrenches into something smaller. I was able to remove the transmission side of the lines.

    While at the store I loaded up on some pre-made hard line.

    On the transmission side I used a 2" section of hard line as a nipple to connect rubber hose to. I put a small flair on the line and double hose clamped the rubber line.

    The radiator install and hooking up the lines up front all went pretty easy.

    Took it for a drive and it shifts great. Might even be smoother than before.

    Did it many times... Fuel line and hose clamps.... Depends on how long you plan on keeping the truck...

    I wouldn't want to screw over the next owner like that just to save a couple of bucks. Besides, I wouldn't want it to fail again on me, either.

    i had a very rusty 93 silverado i used for dump runs and yard work stuff.

    i unbolted the lines at the radiator and the trans. i got some barbed fittings to screw intro each. then i ran some line i got at the local auto parts store, they said it was ok for trans fluid. got hose clamps there too. i left the old rusty lines in the truck and ran the new rubber ones along the old lines as best i could, i secured the rubber liens to the old lines with zip ties. it was still leak free about a year later when i traded the truck in.

    I did that also, used the old hard lines as a place to zip tie the rubber lines. I also covered the lines in aluminum foil tape where they pass the exhaust.

    No fuel line here, I used rubber tranny line. It was about $2/ft, 15ft did the job. It is a 20 year old rusty truck. Not sure how long it is going to stick around. Although it only gets driven 2 or 3000mi a year and has about 120,000 on the clock. So it should last a while.

    I guess that depends on what your definition of not much pressure is.
    My AOD runs 65psi at idle in the cooler line, my th350 runs 80psi at idle. While not alot of pressure, it is more than 'not much pressure' which to me implies a slow dribble.

    A Fuel line hose has worked for me in more than one instance, or until I could get the proper part...
