One day trip to Alba Iulia, the Red Ravine(only from distance because there is a highway construction) and Rimetea where we saw the Seklers Rock.

First stop near a lake - we eat our breakfast:

The Roman Catholic Cathedral (built in the 10th and 11th century - it was completed in 1009 )

The tomb of Hunyadi János is located here, as is that of the Isabella, Queen of Hungary.

    Fantastic write ups and photos.
Riding through Romania this summer en route to Turkey; I'm not sure if we'll get out of Romania now :)
Planning to camp as much as possible, rough camping would be cool so it's good to hear that it's not so hard to do.

Looks fantastic, doesn't it. The bits with tarmac, anyway - I'm wondering if I'm going to have to rethink my tyre choice. Three days to cross the country just doesn't seem like nearly enough with scenery like that.

But the Transfagasaran...it's got to be done.

Take your time.... there is a lot to see....in some places the time stood still....the Transfagarasan worth to be ridden, but don't forget to ride the unpaved roads too.... the more you go off road, the more the scenery gets wilder.

Alas, time is something we won't have. Not for this trip, anyway. I'd originally wanted to ride as far as Constanta, to at least get to the Black Sea, and then plans started to escalate until we ended up with Istanbul as the goal. In the context of this trip, Romania is the place we need to go through to get from Hungary to Bulgaria. Our jobs mean we're all going to be on a fairly tight schedule, if we make it.

But the more I see about Romania, the more I wish we had an extra couple of weeks to do the trip. Depending how things go, a return visit may be on the cards...

Oh yeah, that brought Romania back on the table for the next trip. Last time I couldn't do many unpaved roads, and I sure missed that. Lots of good information here, I may have to re-read it with a map in front of me.

Went to Romania last August. It was so amazing, we're going back in May.

Planning to hit the Transalpina again and then swing over to Transfagarasan. Maybe we can meet up for a beer.

I'm glad you like it. That's good news you're planning to go back there, but meanwhile I moved in Germany, so there are small chances to drink a beer on the Transfagarasan this summer..

    Cheers :freaky

And, indeed, it is. Not sure when, as I'm only just back from that trip, but Romania, god, what a country.

We entered at Arad and spent the night at a really friendly campsite not far from the border (Camping Route Roemenie) where we were introduced to the delights of tuica. The next day we rode past Sibiu and picked up the Transfagarasan, over the top and spent that night just south of the dam at the (wonderfully or tragically, I can't decide) named Camping Dracula and had another night on the tuica. Next day we headed south, past Bucharest (that ring road needs some work, even for Romania the surface was awful) and down to the border at Giurgiu. Bulgaria's another story, but suffice to say the first night involved a lot of rakia. It's almost as if we'd developed a taste for it.

Everyone we met in Romania was friendly, curious, welcoming, amazed we'd ridden a bike there, just...well, everything we'd hoped for and beyond. You have an absolutely beautiful country. We loved it, and I'll definitely be back.

Hosszu, what´s the weather like in Romania late september? I´m thinking about going there when I have a week off, but dunno if it´s too cold?

Do it. I've been there in September and the weather was great, like nice summer days in Denmark with no problem to swim in the Black Sea. In fact, I'll spend September there, too.

    Great, thanks!

Maybe we will bump into each other - if you see a semi worn red v-strom with a rider who struggles with his gps...well, that´s me then!:clap

Usually it's good weather, like end of summer, maybe a little rain, but it's warm. Usually I'm doing longer trips until late November...
