Anybody use these anymore? I am leaving for Alaska in 12 days and not excited about carrying a bunch of cash. I don't see ads for them anymore, I guess with debit cards folks use those. ANyone think there would be a problem using good old fahion travelrs checks in Canada or Alaska?

Many places don't accept travelers checks any more, they have been too easily counterfeited. Better stick to CC, debit card, & ATM.

Use an ATM, no need to carry thousands of dollars.

    Even a McDonald's won't take a Traveler's Check

Although I haven't used them for many years, TC's really are a safe way to carry something that's close to cash.
IIRC, banks, major hotels, and major dept stores would cash them, but many would only accept what was needed for a specific purchase or bill.

ATMs and Debit Cards are the new TC's.

I was afraid they had become extinct. Never used an atm in my life. Better learn I guess and get a card.

They are damn near extinct. If I were to carry them again, I would only carry American Express checks. It's too long a story to post here, but they are the only compant with decent customer service.

They are not extinct, they have evolved. Both Visa and Master Card offer prepaid debit cards specificaly for travel:

We use these even though we have debit cards because we dont have to worry about someone getting our regular account info if they are stolen or cloned. Plus they come with all the protections you got with travelers checks.

If you lose cash it is gone
If you lose a Travelers Check it can be replaced but takes some effort and time.
If you ring you Credit Card company before the trip and report your travels first, they probably will not shut it off at the fuel pump or grocery store in a foreign city and should you lose it then it may be replaced potentially with less hassle than a Travelers Check that are not usually as widely accepted as a credit card..
Then also use a debit card for cash.
So all you may really need is two cards, credit and debit.
