It was supposed to be "The Great West Virginia Raid of 2013", in which several of my buddies and I spent a week or so exploring the mountain state. Wives were to be included. That's probably where we messed up. No one could commit to anything, and as the departure date drew near, people started dropping out. Myself included. Unexpected family matters. Sigh.

The ride turned out to be a bust, anyway. Those who did go and take their wives, ended up trapped in the outlet malls of Pigeon Forge for most of the week. The two guys who didn't take the wimmins was all over WV and VA and NC and KY... in other words, they had a good time.

I decided I wanted to go to Colorado, and I wanted Mrs. B to go with me. She HATES Colorado. She wanted to go to the beach. I HATE the beach. Finally she said she would go, if we could take her Mom with us.

And that's how Maw-Maw got to go...

Now there is no way that Mrs. B would even dream of riding her pristine 450 Rebel across the Great Plains, and MM is one of those prim and proper septegenarians that thinks motorcycles are sinful.

So we ended up with this setup...

Day 1 was the Friday before Labor Day. I got off work early, and by the time the ladies got there, I had the truck loaded (every one takes a crock pot with them when they go on vacation, right?) and the trailer hooked up. The DL650 was strapped down, and I was in the process of tying down the Rebel.

Once all that was done, i needed a few minutes under the AC and drinking water before I could go anywhere.

We travelled late into the night Friday. Saturday we crossed Missouri and about half of Kansas. We spent Saturday night in Salina.

By mid afternoon on Sunday, we had made it to our cabin in Estes Park, and we were delighted to find this:

That's the Big Thompson River right off the back deck. The sound was mesmerizing. The cabin was built in the '30's and had a very relaxing quality to it.

Monday (Labor Day) we went into Rock Mtn National Park. The bikes stayed at the cabin.

We had a late lunch (because we got a late start) in Grand Lake. We drove by "EG's Garden", and the smell was delicious!

We parked and went in. All the seating was outside for lunch, and so they put us at a picnic table in the back. We ordered our food, and then a couple of guys show up with an electric guitar and a wash tub base. They were covering the old 70's hits, and it didn't take long until there was a crowd of obviously overly lubricated fans gyrating around to those groovy tunes, MAN!

:lol3

The place was a honky tonk! Maw-Maw doesn't like honky tonks. :rofl

The food was delicious. We escaped with our lives, and the girls went and browsed the stores whilst I held down a bench and people watched.

Monday night I told the ladies that I was going to get up early in the morning, and I would be gone on the bike all day.

Atokad over in the Rockies forum suggested Guanella pass, so I headed south out of Estes Park. Found this jewel just south of town.

this is on Guanella Pass Road, just south of Georgetown
[IMG]

just a little further on, I came around a 10mph curve and suddenly a rock about the side of a loaf of bread came rolling down the cliff face and onto the road in front of me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw some movement up above. I barely had time to get this shot...

I took a dirty little side trip

I found a nice, remote campground. This was as far as I could go with an internal combustion engine.

Going to a restaurant<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
It goes something like this:
Waiter – “Would you like something to drink?
Me – “water is fine, thank you.”
Wife – “Diet Coke, please”
MIL – “I would like a cup of coffee, black, and a cup of hot water, and a glass of ice water.”
Once the drinks arrive, the hot water is used to cut the coffee, because it is ALWAYS “too strong”.
Waiter – “Are you ready to order?”
Me – “I am”
Wife – “Me too”
MIL – stares silently at the menu
Wife – “I guess we need a few more minutes”
The waiter goes away.
Wife then reviews the menu with MIL and explains her options to her.
Eventually (I am SOOOO hungry) the waiter returns.
I order.
Wife orders.
MIL orders, but she has a long list of modifications. They ALWAYS get it wrong.

Coming to the end of the Guanella Pass Road
[IMG]

At this point I had intended to go west, then North again on CO 9. As it turned out, traffic was stopped for construction, so I just turned around and rode Guanella Pass again, going north this time.

There appeared to be some bad weather moving in. I was concerned that the dirt road may get slick when it got wet, and I didn't want to be on top of the pass if there was lightening around. I hauled derriere just as fast as I dared to go.

When I got back to where I had seen the Bighorn Sheep before, there must have been 15 - 20 of them in the road. Some of them ran away, but most of them just stood there and watched me. I tried to get some pics, but I can't find any. Not sure what happened. I could have reached out and touched them...

I bought one of those heghly detailed "atlas" maps of Colorado. You know the type, multiple pages, shows every pimple on every butt in the state...

In that book (map? Atlas?) I noticed a road between Idaho Springs and Central City that was labelled "Oh My God!".

Well, when I left the cabin that morning, Mrs. B told me to be careful. I forgot.

I had to find the OMG road...
