Triumph 750 engine tear down question.

    Success! Left side is off. Not bad at all.

    Now I need to get the crank out. Pinion gear is still attached (no puller yet) so I'll pull the pinion with main bearing out of the case, then deal with it.

    Looking good, my sludge trap was not that bad but I felt better knowing it was clean.

    I'm the same way about the trap. I don't expect much in there, but since I had the engine apart for new rings anyway, I figured I might as well put it back together all nice and clean.

    I got the bike last year after it sat for 30 years in a closet of the local high school auto class. It will be a blast to hear it run. Maybe by spring...

    Curious to hear how bad the trap is. Your bike looks great, I really miss having a Triumph and hope to find another one someday, maybe a 500 twin.

    I'll let you know what I find. I had to leave it half-opened for now. I did what I could to remove the pinion gear, but didn't want to force it, so the proper tool is on the way. Should arrive this week.

    I moved too fast and didn't mark my shifter before pulling the inner cover, so now I'll learn all about indexing. fun fun!

    I hope to get at the trap this weekend. Will post results.

    I was going to go that route, but then figured with a puller on the way, I'd just wait. If I end up baking it, do you recommend a certain temp? For how long?

    It's just the right hand side of the case, with the crank. Oil pump is still attached. I have an old baking sheet in my shop I can put the case in. Maybe baste it with a nice little 5W-30? Ha!

    Remove the oil pump as you might as well replace the gasket anyhow. I put mine in the oven at 250 but the crank and bearing fell out before that point, the pinion tool was a waste of money for me, could not hold up to the pressure. Make sure you post pics of the parts in the oven if the wife or girlfriend sees them.

    I'll try the oven. Just curious: did you do the sludge trap with bearing and pinion in place, or did you remove them after the crank was out of the case?

    20 minutes at 250 didn't do anything. Even with a few gentle taps with a dead blow hammer.

    by putting the whole thing in the oven it all expands at the same rate. This method works for just the crankcase prior to dropping the bearing ( which you put in the fridge before hand) in on assembly.
    I'd use a heat gun around the bearing housing.
    I take it you fitting new bearings after using a hammer on them.:D

    The puller fits over the pinion gear and pulls off without heat....well it should do.

    On the 650s the three gears have dots that line up for the cam timing with one keyway on each, although I have ones with 3 keyways that require dial guages to set up...

    Earlier models have a timed cam breather but I'm not sure on the 750's.

    Well the puller came today and after a little bit of wrestling, I got it over the gear and without too much effort, the gear came off! Meanwhile the crank is still firmly stuck in the bearing, so I'm not done yet.

    Don't feel bad, my crank inside the bearing had been peened over with an AIR HAMMER!

    I've got a heat gun (electric type) so I can use that tomorrow. I'm just happy to have the pinion off in one piece.

    Is it a for-real HeatMaster industrial gun? You may still need a bit of judiciously applied propane torch in the general area around the bearing. Good luck!

    I don't know if it's HeatMaster, but it's an industrial heat gun. I'll try that before anything else. It gets plenty hot.

    I really appreciate all the help! I've gone through the manuals, watched all the videos, but when it doesn't do what it's supposd to, it's nice to have a group who've lived through it. Thanks.
