any comment on the strength of the cast wheels?

Triumph Tiger 800XC: Thinking ahead in the fast growing adventure touring market, Safari is now developing an approx. 8 gallon fuel tank for the Tiger XC.
Other current unknowns are :-
Power output. If it's 120+bhp how is the 150/70 rear tyre going to cope?
Wet weight. I think it'll be similar to the Tiger955i which will mean limited dirt road use.
Price. Gotta come in under £10K to beat the BMW.

I'm going to stick with the 800, it suits me fine. I tried a 1200GS for size and it just felt far too big and bulky for me and the Tiger 1200 will be a similar size.

This is good to know. Confidence is very important ... good to see so many T800XC guys getting out there doing off road. Excellent! You guys are my heroes ... as I'm not buying a Tiger until I'm sure the thing can stand up to a hammering and survive!
If you use all 120 HP obviously it will be hard on the tire ... any tire. But weight is just as much of a factor. But if Triumph go bigger than 150 section, what would they offer for an off road tire? I think a 150 is fine. Plenty tough. The 12GS probably still has more torque and they do OK.
Now with the 1200 coming out which I thought I wanted, I'm not sure if I want ride-by-wire or ABS and traction control so I'm looking back at the 800 roadie . I have owned a 955i S3 and loved the motor I don't need anymore power but don't want to give much up either.
So I'm curious as to if some of you have riden or owned the older 955 tiger and what are your thoughts.
1) Did you give up much in performance from the 955i to the 800 or is it minimal ?
2) Is the 800 good as a two up bike as the 955i was, as this is very important to me?
I've sat on the bike(roadie version) at the dealers and liked its looks and seat height but wasn't sure if I would miss the power of the 955i for two up ,and now not sure if the 1200 went to far the other way. Also the 1050 tiger just doesn't do it for me I don't like the high passenger seat or how the bags sit on the bike. Thanks
I still own a Tiger955i and have now done 11500 miles on my XC. I don't think the 800 loses much on the 955 because it weighs about 35Kgs less fully fuelled. To ride it feels much lighter ans swaps from side to side effortlessly compared to the 955 which needs a good tug.
Two up? I can't comment.
My choice between the two 800s was the XC because it was far more stable on the road. The std. 800 felt flighty over lumpy roads and you really needed to hang on to it and the XC didn't lose anything on the road either. The extra off road ability of the XC was, of course, a big bonus too.
Got an 06' 955 tiger & 11' 800xc. Like 'em both. The 800 has the power, but more linnear than 955. The Girlie has a surge around 6K rpm that feels like a 'boost' in acceleration. But passing trucks is just as quick on 800 as 955. My wife has her own bike - so cant comment on 2 up performance. The 800 does feel a bit more flickable - even with 21" tire. I still like the 955 for road / touring trips, where dirt isnt on the menu. Both good machines - but if i could only have 1 - it would likely be the 800. But I have NO plans to give up the Girlie.
Same here. I just traded my 2009 Varadero in last September for the 800ABS roadie. I only had the Honda "SumoDero" for a year and although it is an awesome bike the weight is significant and all of it up high. I dropped it very slowly once thinking I had the sidestand down (Yes, I know....). I was barely able to bring it back up with my back against the bike and lifting with my legs. Being used to sportbikes, in the end I didn't want the weight. I would be surprised if the new Tiger 1200+ would scale in below 600lbs. Too much for my liking.
Thanks blacktiger & jphish for your comments on the 800 and 955i tigers. I guess I need to take a test ride someday to see if I like it or not and if it will work for me.
Using a bathroom scale or any scale where front the rear wheels are weighed separately are not all that accurate. The Ride On scale shown above is most likely dead on. Notice the brand! Toledo.
There is a hospital near my house with a ride up scale at the loading ramp. They weigh laundry hampers. Once I ride up the ramp ... I can push the bike right on to the scale. Very accurate ... and never matches my bathroom scale figures ... which are always LIGHTER than the real industrial scale results.
Don't ask me to explain this ... I have no idea why bathroom scales don't work.
If you use a single scale and don't level the bike, the readings will be off.
Using bathroom scales, it's best to use two scales, leveled, one under each tire.
Back in my SCCA racing days we used a four-set of (racing, not bathroom) scales to help to figure out where weight needed to be in the car when it was fueled and had the driver on board. They always had to be at the same height for it to be a valid exercise.

It's a 1984 VF500f with a Shinko 244 front and a Dunlop 850A rear (or Kenda 761 for dinner dates).
How does it handle on dirt?
Pretty darn good for a 20something sport bike. .

I'm NOT jealous or anything.
I did use a bathroom scale but I made sure each wheel was at the same elevation by shoring it up with a 2x4 and some plywood. The scale is fairly accurate, although not quite up to the spec of a Toledo. I weigh myself at a clinic on a slide scale, then go home and calibrate the bathroom scale to match. It should be pretty good. With a claimed curb weight of 462 lbs for the 800 Roadie I was a little disappointed to see a total of 490 lbs. Maybe they put helium in the tires.
Sprint ST's and some models of the Sprint RS (1 year - the last I believe) as well as most model year Daytona 955i's use/had SSSA so they do have a fair bit of experience with them.
