    Great first report Jenny! :clap

Spurted coffee at the 8-bit hotel comment :lol3

I got some material from my friend Timi late last night, she is with the MACAD team of Tony Schattat (WR450), Ed Taylor (EXC300) and this year's second place in the Africa Race, Guillaume Martens (on his 690RR).

A bit of testing in the dunes yesterday:

Team Torque Racing travelogue... Day -2 (1 day before scrutineering)...

Had an amble around the paddock this morining - all ready a number of teams are setting up and undetaking their fianl prep prior to scrutineering tomorrow (Friday).

Caught up with a few friends and faces, and found Tony (Schattat) and Ed busy prepping their bikes in the shade, have undertaken a long journey last night to reach Douz in the small hours, and grab a few hours sleep in a nearby hotel...

Tony had bought a box of RNS equipment with him, having not had time to fit it all prior to shipping the bike last week:

Team mate Ed Taylor (they are both entered in Malle Moto) is the only rider on a 2-stroke this year - a KTM 300 EXC - and was also busy with last minute prep:

Across the car-park, Patsy and the Desert Rose Racing truck pulled in early this morning, again after a long night drive south from Tunis... Dave Peckham from RMS had travelled down from the UK with them, and RMS will be looking after the US contingent literally under the Desert Rose banner, or at least a spare canopy!

Now we just have to wait for the rest of the riders, and our own team bikes to arrive! Jx

This rally is sounding like the de facto ADV inmate rally to be at. Time to start planning to be there next year!

Hey Jenny, am a mate of Guillaume Martens from team MACAD and posted the daily reports on his FB page during the Africa Eco Race.
See that you are also following Tony Schattat who is in team MACAD together with Edward Taylor and the charming Polytimi.
Hopefully I can post some more during this rally and off course keeping fingers crossed that Guillaume can surprise us all again.
Looking forward to your reports... :clap

Rally Raid Sweden is having a relaxing day with only scrutineering on the agenda. I'm told it is rather warm for this time of the year, in the high twenties. Will give nice and soft dunes.

Team Torque Racing travelogue - Day -1 (Scrutineering)...

The Memo Tours transport assistance truck arrived early this morning - loaded with a couple of dozen rally bikes, together with a race car in the two-tier trailer!

With the Torque Race bikes unloaded, our riders joined the rest of the throng for the event admin and scrutineering checks, that with the high number of competitors is scheduled to take most of the day...

Early morning admin line comprehensively resisted moshing to German heavy-metal played continuously over the PA...

Of course the most important thing prior to presenting for scrutineering is to make sure your graphics are fitted correctly!

ktmmitch has come up with an innovative way to stash his axle wrench:

Walking around the paddock it was most enjoyable to see the different approaches and solutions to what are basically the same set of requirements - that is sufficient fuel capacity, navigation gear (roadbook holder, trip meter and a GPS as a minimum), emergency water, and somewhere to stash tools, essential spares and safety equipment - and despite the majority of the field being on what are essentially converted enduro bikes - no two machines were the same.

The majority of the field are [of course] on KTMs of one sort of another... plenty of EXCs with bigger tanks (including Ed Taylor's solitary 2-stroke - brave fellow!), together with a large number of 690 Enduros with all manner of tank and fairing combinations - typically from the Rally Raid catalogue, and not least a handful of 640 Adventures and ex factory 690RR and 660 Rallye bikes.

Husaburg have a particularly good showing this year, the FE 450 and 570 offering a very slim and [visually] lightweight alternative... and on a similar theme I counted a number of Husqvarna 449 and even a brace of G450X's in 'rally lite' configuration...

Over the past couple of days the organisation have delighted in telling everyone how soft the sand dunes are that surround Douz, and that it's going to be a tough rally right from the start... in fact they have described the first 7 kms of the first special as [potentially] 'hell' for riders who are inexperienced or at least not fully committed!

Coupled with the GP style mass-start, it could well be a baptism of fire for those new to the desert, especially on the bigger bikes!

Take a look at Hasse Jiredal & Mattias Talonen Husaberg Race bike at the Swedish Rally Raid tent. They have built their bikes almost the same as the swedish Dakar rider Tomas Berglund bike! :)
