I picked up a cheap chinese android GPS a while back and it came with the iGo Primo app. I've been messing around with navigating on unpaved forest service roads (which the gps has in its base maps) using KML routes created in google maps and imported to the device. It hates them. Instead of following the FS roads I want, it keeps trying to backtrack to paved roads, adding huge distances to the route. I think if i were to add enough waypoints to the route it might follow the roads I want, but it would probably end up being a lot of work to create. Does anyone have any tips for creating better route files or maybe a better app that does turn-by-turn navigation on unpaved roads? I also use the back country navigator app that shows tracks but it doesn't give you directions, which would be nice.

IGO use the points creates when you draw the route and make their own route with the preference configuration and the available roads on the map, dont read "the track", only use the "waypoints"

Is there any way to set routing preferences or avoidances? If so, the default may be to prefer paved or avoid dirt.

    Google maps does it. Offline.

At least I think I was offline. Last Friday I dropped a pin at camp and saved an offline map. Google voice guided me right to camp, on gravel and Jeep roads!

routes don't work very well, as ours only a series of waypoints that the GPS is supposed to creat your path from. tracks work much better.
