    I needed some helmet time.

With a 4 day weekend, I decided I wanted to ride some of my favorite California twisty roads.
After a long shift at work, I left Phoenix around 6 PM and headed towards the sun.

Thankfully, I didn't have to stare into the sun very long.

It was dark when I left Parker, Arizona and entered California.

After about 250 miles for the day, I found a sandy camping spot about a mile off the highway along Sheephole Valley Wilderness Road.
I set up camp under a bright moon.

That was my first night in my new 1 person tent. It worked well for me and weighs only 2.5 pounds, compared to my 2 man tent that weighs 8.

    Sunrise in the desert!

    360 degree pano

I was back on the road early.

There was a blanket of clouds on the mountains near Tehachapi. I entered the clouds and the temp dropped 20 degrees in about 2 minutes.

I get to my first twisted road, but it is wet...

I seem to have left the desert behind.
Caliente-Bodfish Road is a fun, twisty, and bumpy roller coaster...

...but it was wet with poor visibility at times. I still had some fun.

    Traffic was dead. :grim

After awhile it cleared up some. Down there is Bodfish and Lake Isabella.

After a quick lunch I headed up along the raging Kern River.

Back in the mountains I headed down towards California Hot Springs.
It was wet with very low visibility making the descent quite precarious.

    Fire season already?

In Springville I had some OK Mexican food...

Then went a short ways up Bear Creek and Balch Park Roads. Both were still closed.
It's a good thing I had booked a room, since my original plan was to camp at Balch Park.

Yokohl Valley Road is still one of my favorites.

From the top of Yokohl Valley Road I took a shortcut on Behm Road, which dumped me out near Tulare.

I checked into my hotel in Tulare and caught the sunset over a grocery store parking lot with a cellphone, while walking to dinner.

    Day 3.

    I jumped out of bed...

...and headed back towards the hills.

Today is gonna be a really twisted affair.

I didn't mind the farm roads, but that's not what I came here for.

    Almost there!

Man! The 245 is such a sweet road and it was my first time for this first half of it.

I stopped in at the Mountain House for the first time. I talked with a couple from Tulare up here on the Yamaha triple. We all agreed The Western Divide Highway is the best in the area. I had skipped that yesterday when riding in the clouds. The rider tells me it had been opened only 3 weeks earlier.

    I had a second breakfast....

I rode my favorites, Dunlap RD, Elwood RD, Trimmer Springs RD, Maxon RD, Watts/Burrough Valley RD, Tollhouse RD, and Auberry RD.

I didn't stop much for pics, just leaned all day.

At one point I took a break where I had a view of the valley below. I watched and listened to this beautiful RC-51 working up the hill for maybe 10 minutes before it reached me.

Near Auberry I headed out towards Stevenson Falls, but was stopped short by a locked gate.
This was my turn around point anyway, and the goal I had set to reach, but I wasn't terribly disappointed.

With none of the major passes open yet, I need to turn back towards home.

I had ridden about 150 miles of my favorite roads, so I turned around and rode the exact route again.

I ended the day back at the same hotel room.

    Day 4

On the first night I had a strong cellphone signal, even though I was in the desert 30 miles from Twentynine Palms. Since then, my phone had lost all mobile network connection. So, I spent all morning at a Verizon store trying to get it repaired - with no success.

I say that to let you know, I was in a foul mood when I finally got a late start. I tried to shake it off as I had some really good riding left, but I was not shooting any pics. I had pretty much decided I wasn't going to report this ride.

I did Yokohl Valley RD again and then the awesomeness that is the Western Divide Highway.

I finally stopped for a pic at this little waterfall. It is usually just a trickle.

I again rode along the Kern River and Caliente-Bodfish RD, but no pics. Late in the day I stopped in Barstow to top off fluids and grabbed a sub sandwich.

I have slept in a little paved pull-through at the top of a small pass south of Barstow maybe 5-6 times before, but I can do better. Only 2 miles from that spot, I found several perfect campsites down a sandy trail in the OHV area north of the Ord Mountains.

I scarfed down my sandwich as I scurried around trying to capture the sunset.

I then crawled into my 1 person mobile home and read a few chapters before drifting off to sleep.

    Day 5

I got an early start to the day. I have about 350 miles to ride today.

I was crossing Lucerne Lake when the sun came up.

I did all 350 miles before noon without taking another picture. It was Monday and I wanted to get home where I could finally start working to get my cellphone service restored. As I write this a week later - I'm still waiting... :becca

I think the RC-51 was on Tollhouse RD, so he's probably a local rider from the Fresno area.

I somehow missed this one back in May. Always enjoy your writing and pics. I actually have enjoyed almost ALL of these roads here in this report, thx to YOU, an ARIZONAN. I have been on those roads more then once since your first reporting on these. I concur, the "Mighty 190" is simply Sublime.
Need a video with some Prog for this one:). I made some vids on my YT channel about some of these. CA245 is one.
    Thx for the report Dave.

Pretty nice ride report that I just discovered @dave6253! Reading about the Kern River had me considering I was in that area earlier this year. Looking back at pictures, I was riding from Kernville to Sherman Pass on April 12th.

Sure like the areas you get into!

I just happened upon this RR Dave. Even tho it's just 1 page, still entertaining as always. One of these days when passing through Parker I do hope you'll turn right and come by.
