I recently purchased a photo off Ebay of Kenny, Corky and I believe, Rex Beauchamp. Kenny riding the TZ.
I had never seen it before. It is a reproduction of one of Dan Mahony's great shots.
I worked at YIC when the "Monster" was brought by. I heard Kenny utter those words, "They don't pay me enough to ride this thing".
It wasn't to long before Scott Brelsford was riding a Irv Kanemoto tuned Champion framed H1R Kawasaki at he San jose Mile. Rick Hocking was aboard a Honda 750 four. It seemed everyone was bringing out whatever multi-cylinder go fast thing they could build to cope with the more powerful XR750s at the time.
The Peter Starr movie mentioned above (Take it to the limit) is the only footage I have ever seen of the "Monster" in action. I got a copy off Ebay a couple years ago for $35. I felt I got a bargain!!! Great footage of Barry Sheene, Steve Baker and other top riders of the day.
You are one of the lucky ones. I've only ever seen a couple them up for sale. It would be great if some company could digitally redo it and then put it on DVD, of course I'm dreaming.
If I Remember right the multi cylinder bikes started showing up in 1972. Besides the Kawi H1's & H2s and the Honda 750 4's. Some people were trying the BSA Rocket 3's and the Trident's. Even saw a guy on a Suzuki 750 GT water buffalo. Wish I still had those pictures.
I searched all over and have not been able to locate a DVD version of the movie.
Yeah, the Rocket 3's and Trident showed up earlier, but once the TZ hit the track, All the others came out of the woodwork. I worked with a guy at U.S. Suzuki who built a TR spec Trackmaster Suzuki 750 triple for The San Jose Mile races. Ron Grant also built a Suzuki Triple for Pat Hennen.
Ronnie Rahls also ran a Suzuki triple. Most experienced the same problem, lack of traction. If they could have used the "Big Bang" setup that is used in MotoGP today, they may have had more success...
I have a photo I took of Irv Kanemoto working on one of 2 Kawi triples he tuned on and another of Don Castro sitting on a Kanemoto Kawi waiting to practice at San Jose. Scott Brelsford rode the other Kawi.

Great pictures. Yep, that 's the 750 Suzuki I saw, but one question. What year was it that Brelsford rode the Kawai and wasn't it a H-2?? Or was it an H-1 when he was a junior and before he stated riding for H-D??:huh I think I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to get CRS .
Didn't Gary Nixon show up with a Trident the first race it was eligible to run in flat track?
How did that turn out?
You want to talk about CRS... I wrote the book!! Unless I had a picture or old magazine to refer to, I'm outta luck! The Kawi's were the H2s and Scott may have been a junior, but don't hold me to that.
XLCR.. I only know that Triumph and BSA were in the same boat, getting tired of the purpose built XR750 H-D beating them. Everyone was looking for more horsepower to compete with the Harleys. I can' remember when they started running them, but I seem to remember seeing photos from Santa Rosa, and Sacramento miles with Aldana,Rice and Nixon riding triples. Just can't recall the year.

There were no XRs at the 1969 Nazareth mile.

Those were surely great times. Flattrack racing today just doesn't do it for me. For that matter, Supperbike racing is nothing but a Suzuki parade anymore. MotoGP has gotten very boring what with traction control, wheelie control, etc... I want to see man v. machine not man aided by umpty eleven zillion gigabyte onboard engine control system. Smoke them tires!! 240 hp should get the A$$ end of a GP bike hung out.
Sorry for the rant... Just saying, the riders today don't have to "Ride" the bikes, the bikes do most of it for the rider.
KR's, those were the earlier H-D flathead 750 engines, 45 cubic inch. Another H-D 750 flathead was the WR.
A friend of mine runs AHMRA with each of this two types of bikes .
Since it seams that some of the guys that have replied to this thread haven't seen Kenny Roberts at the Indy Mile, I've just found that someone did what I wasn't able to do.
The footage from "Take it to the Limit", which shows Kenny on the TZ 750 is up on You Tube. It's only a few minutes long, but you can get the idea of what it took to ride that beast. He was riding the hay bales:huh .
Who ever put it up a big Thank You is in order .
