After some information as to the best UHF to purchase.
    What brand is preffered?
    What wattage, 1W, 3W or 5W?
Are there handlebar mounts available for the radio itself?
    reliability?

I saw the add in Trailzone from Days Motorcycles in Victoria and thought the deal looked pretty good, any advice would be appreciated.

We run ours through Autocom units permanently mounted and hardwired to bike. Pretty good range in thopen. Probably around 5km's.

    Hope this helps.

    Can post pics if needed.

    Cheers,

Gman640 and I both run gme tx6200 with the ptt button attached to our camelbag chest strap and carry the radios in our camelbacks.

Both have the trailzone set up and they work well up to about 70km/h after that you know when somebody is speaking but not much else. good for warnings about oncoming cars, stock on the road etc etc

Found that if there are 2 many cables (such as the ptt and/or power cable) attached between you and the bike you will break one the first time you have a lay down.

ktmajor has a good set up.

range depends on the terrain 10-15k out west 1-2k in really hilly areas.

Mate I wouldnt piss around with anything less than a 5watt. I take a
Uniden UH-052XR. Can be switched from 1 watt to 5 depending on your distance. Those 1 watt jobs are useless if you are in thick trees. I do believe that Days motorcycles is doing great deals on 5watt units with PPT setups.

I finally hooked my helmet/ mic set up I got from Day's Motorcycles ( 12 months ago ) , turns out they have a two pin plug , so it will only fit a UHF radio with a two pin setup , it did fit a Gme but didn't perform to it full potential . Phoned Day's , they said go for the 2 watt Uniden UHO44 , it turns out it's pretty much a discontinued model but managed to get my hands on one . The new model is not released till next month .

Havn't fully tested it yet as it's for a trip leaving this weekend .

I have a Uniden UH075 which is water resistant and also an Autocom system..

Don`t know how they work cause I`m too bloody lazy to get off my ass and hook them up.. :dunno

The only down side to the Uniden is that the battery only lasts for 12 hours between recharges.. As far as I know there is no power supply that can be hooked direct to this unit.. It can sit in it`s own recharge cradle but that would be no good for traveling..

I'm running the GME TX6200 - chosen because it has a bullet proof chassis, 5w, great battery life.

Running through my Starcom system which incorporates the PTT button as well as letting me plug in GPS, Phone and Ipod... can get a bit busy in my helmet at times...

I leave the radio and Starcom unit in the Glovebox on the 950.

I have the radio connected to an in car kit with a medium gain aerial mounted on the rear of the bike. The incar kit connects the aerial as well as trickle charges the battery via the aerial socket. I have cut up the original housing that is also a Mic bracket so it is about 60x20x30mm

I use a medium gain aerial as the higher gain you use the less the angle of transmission which can limit range on hilly terrain.
