    Masterbrewer ( aka Old C--t / Wise Ol' C--- ); Bazzz ( aka Grumpy C--- / XTE Knoddy ) & Rick ( aka Young C--- / "Brampton Island Rick" )

Now for those unfamiliar with the Oz Outback language or less "adventurous outback",
please substitute the letters "h a p" for the last three letters in the above aka's.

    What the TDM is packin' (being a Wise Ol' C--- );

    * 4 litres of red wine freshly decanted into 1 litre plastic bottles
stategically placed about the bike in case of an incident.
Sh#t !........ it would be a real shame to lose it all in one pile-up....hey?
They may laugh at me now, BUT time will tell.

    The rest of the stuff is only incidental;
    * 8 litres of water ( for the young tacka's to drink )
    * 10 litres of fuel (extra)
    * 2 litres of oil (thirsty buggas these TDM's)
    * Chain lube
    * Tools
    * Puncture repair stuff & spare tube
    * On board compressor
    * Tyre levers
    * Tow rope
    * spare clutch lever
    * 7 days food (sort of that is )
    * Cooker & fuel
    * Tent
    * Sleeping bag & air mattress
    * spare set of clothes & shoes if I have an incident & spill the wine )
    * Maps & misc stuff.

What the XTE 600 is packin' :

    * Knoddy

What the Dakar 650 is packin' :

    * Style .............................err & yeh!.....sh#t hot economy

    The Destination:

Ulysses Adv Riders 2nd Outback Odyssey 2007 from Adelaide , South Australia to Winton, Queensland ............through the Tirari Desert; the Sturt Stony Desert; the edge of the Simpson Desert; the Queensland Channel Country & the Strzelecki Desert.......via Renmark; Danggali Conservation Park; Yunta; Frome Downs; Copley; Lyndhurst; Marree; Mungerannie; Birdsville; Bedourie; Boulia; Winton & return, workin' it out as we go.

The Motto: "Ride Safe; Ride Dirt; Keep Smiling & everyone will be wondering what you've been up to"

Ulysses Adv Riders are 50 (+), Old C...s who have juniors over 40 and can bring along some younger tackas' from time to time to show them the ropes.

We travel the outback at a quiet leisurely pace ( 5,500kms in 10 days ) so we can take lots of photos ( to aid memory loss ) and be able to enjoy the smells of the outback ( ie dirt, dust, chain lube & B O )

You will often hear the cry : " Are we havin' fun yet " ?

    The Trip begins:

    Heading north out of Renmark

This is where we are gunna go from here......says Knoddy

Wayne ( BMW 1150gs ) had joined us and led the way through the many tracks along the Murray River lagoons north of Renmark.

First incident: Rick's hugger fell off.................

    BMW's.......minus 1. Yammies..........0.

Next incident: Wayne's pannier fell off............ OK Guys............. who stole my pannier?

    BMW's ........minus 2. Yammies...........0.

This turned out to be a special moment for the commeraderie of the group.

You see, Wayne had spent a lot of time trying to equalize the weight of his panniers. Unfortunately for him, he was in our firing line when he hadn't noticed that he had lost one some k's back over this type of ground. Can you spot the missing pannier?

It was assumed that there was one shoe in each pannier.

Thus..............the "one shoe Wayne" greeting was born

And this was before we had even got to Danggali Conservation Park less than 40 kms from Renmark

    Finally we reach Danggali

"Well balanced Wayne" is back together again

That is until we hit this stuff...........soft.....rutted.....loose sandy sections

    Sure gets ya feeling hungry

"Brampton Island Rick's" a'la carte style

If I hide down here, they won't see I'm actually eating my kids junk food

    We survived Danggali

Amazingly on reaching Yunta we arrived at exactly the same second as BTWTom (Tiger) & Mark (KTM640) who came up along the railway line from Adelaide.

Unfortunately Brett's Tiger became sick & was to only last a further 15kms

Please!.....please!.....please!.....don't die on me Darling!.....I'll promise to sell the DRZ

"Someone got a dead Tiger to remove & bury here?"

Brett somehow made it back to Adelaide, (minus 1,000 reliability points) rebuilt the electrics and set off to meet us on our return to Innaminka.

Wayne (BMW1150gs) decided to return to Adelaide from Yunta (minus 1,000 reliability points) & rebuild his panniers. He later turned up at Winton Qld before us.

That meant we started with four riders in our group: + 2 (Tiger & KTM) - (BMW) - (Tiger) back to four again.

The reliability score so far: BMW's (-1,002 points) Tiger (-1,000 points) Yammies (0 points) KTM (0 points)

First nights camp was north of Yunta near Lake Frome.

Camp fires stir the sole for adventurers'

    First nights entertainment:............"Frome Lake Ballet"

    Frome Lake....act two

Do you know this guy?................He's your friend isn't here?

Next day on to Frome Downs near Lake Frome in South Australia

The road is like a highway

Then through Copley, Lyndhurst, Marree to start The Birdsville Track

    The Birdsville Track

Through Marree we stayed at Clayton for camp No2,

"G'Day Mate.........................I'll be with you in a minute...............don't be scared"

    After a long days ride.............

    Thermal spa = bliss ...................Aaaarrrgghhhh!.....

Tonights Entertainment for your pleasure: "Syncronized Hot Tub Soaking"

Followed by fine dining & a few drinks

Don't even think of it, ballet was last night

    Sunrise was fantastic

A quick look at the wetlands in the middle of a desert

Then off to wash the bikes & riders

The Birdsville Track through the Tirari Desert was smooth & fast

Mind you many an outback adventurer has come to his peril trying to change lanes though

    Gone in 6 seconds

    The mighty Cooper Creek

    The story

The Burger Boys take a ride in history

Then on to Mungerannie, an Australian oasis halfway along the Birdsville Track between Marree & Birdsville

Now the more important Mungerannie Hotel (that's for refueling importance only of course)

The track through the Sturt Stony Desert was rough & undulating at times

Some not so great sections............here we stopped to count how many lives we all have left after getting through that dark section in the distance

    But also smooth

    Knoddy rides the "Birdsville"

The last 50kms along the Birdsville Track was smooth and fun to ride

Just imagine what the TDM did with this section!!

Hey guys, we've ridden The Birdsville Track & lived

Oh No !!! ....................................we are too late

    Only joking

After a testing time (couldn't resist) on this road into Birdsville.

The TDM ran out of fuel just as I entered the Caravan Park. An airlock in the fuel line helped flatten the battery requiring a push start the next day.

    Score: Yammies minus 1

Due to the contagious horse flu there were no horses permitted at the Birdsville Races for 2007 which were held the previous week.

Sunset over the Diamantina River through the Birdsville Caravan Park was very relaxing

Audi Trans-Continental Crossing circus ($$$$$$$$$$$$$) was in town

Their circus was luring "Brampton Island Rick"

    Our circus

At least there were cold beers at the pub

Next day & into the Simpson Desert to find "Big Red"

Who put this sand hill here?

It's bigger when you get close

    Time for a strategy meeting

It's easy guys......................what?...............it's not "Big Red"?

Of course it is surely................................... right?

We'll just take a classic shot and say it is...........what do you reckon.....................hey?

Reality is .................who gives a sh#t............we'll just tackle one hill at a time

    Bugga!!!!!

Is the frame supposed to look like that, Bazzz?

I'm heading back to Birdsville to find a welder, guys

Meanwhile.......Can you see Big Red from there?

He wouldn't have got through this stuff, even if he had got more than 30 metres up the hill

Back in Birdsville........if I just pull this, everything should just fall off!

    KTM's never break like that!..............................ggggrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!...uuumm?????........breathe!!.........breathe!!.......breathe!!!!!!

Was I carrying that much stuff? .................Look a supa-motard XTE

The Score: Yammies another Minus (something)

Due to the Audi circus's showers & shitter trailers' suspensions requiring urgent rewelding, we were delayed some 7 hours before heading to Bedourie. (their "Kenny" driver was enjoying the break away from the journo's......... way too much I think)

Once at Bedourie, we intended to pickup a few beers at the pub and head out to another "great campsite under the stars". But were forced to drink them there in quick time.

A herd of wild brumbies galloping across the road to our campsite in front of us, had us guessing somewhat though!

    Setting up camp

Tonights Entertainment: Brampton Island Rick's version of "Bedourie Bush Ballads & Karoke" with the aid of his stool

If you listened closely you could hear the call of the wild dingos' howling in the still night air.............

    ..............CAN'T SING! ..............CAN'T DANCE! .............CAN'T PLAY FOOTBALL! ..............

The quick drinks started to take their toll

The entertainment concluded with a salute to those departed from our group............ie "One shoe Wayne"

    Stuff putting up the tent

    Next morning was quiet

That is until we found the local luxury outback loo

Beautiful pics (except the one above, ewww!). Weird how the knobbies make the TDM look like a completely different bike.

    Off to Boulia

    What's up Bazzz?

Should be OK it's only flat at the bottom

I'll just push it to those shady trees in the distance.............but Bazzz.....it's a mirage

However he wasn't listening with that look of determination on his face

Finally we were all pissed off

Don't stop Bazzz it's hot waiting out here

OK you can have a coffee too

Why the F#%k did I put that sh#t in for?

    Take cover guys................... Roadtrain coming

    The Georgina River

    Finally the Min Min Hotel

    First encounter

    First Contact

    The Alien Burger

When was the last time you saw a burger this big with both Beetroot & Pineapple?.................................must be alien!

Whoosh!...........Without wasting any time, Bazz was in for the kill

    gggrrrrrr!!!.............munch!!!!munch!!!!

Unfortunately Rick hadn't noticed that the "burger" was growing in size in his hand and if he didn't act quickly would eat him first.........definitely an alien

Like the sixties sci-fi black & white movies something had come over us.

    The locals seemed different

The dirt road turned to tar.

When we stopped, we seemed to be leaking something

    The camels were more attractive

And I felt I was riding through Arizona

Finally we reached Cawnpore Lookout and felt a higher body

But then when I laid on this table.........?????? check out the sign above me

Reality came back when we reached Middleton Hotel

    and the Diamantina River intersection

The Ulysses Adventure Riders display in the main street of Winton was awesome

Over 200 Ulysses Adv riders from all over Oz attended the proceedings, less about 6 or so who didn't quite make it and were nursing broken limbs at various locations away from Winton

Apparantly I found myself sleeping in the shitta after someone had moved the "Gents" sign.............luckily no one was off their face that much that they didn't realize when they opend our door

Of course we had to sample the local food

The locals had found a way of dealing with overstaying your welcome.....................just cement it in the wall

We were shown the locals' playground in & around the Bladensburg National Park

    Opal mining was common

    Now the journey home

Looking back to Winton on the road to Jundah.

Did I mention that a hawk seemed to be still following us..............every time we stopped it was hovering above.........................did we look like a potential roadkill feast in its eyes?????.....................scarey stuff if you thought about it too much.

    Resting under a Coolabah Tree

Not much flowing in the famous Barcoo River

    But then after hours of desert riding we came to the Kyabra Creek secret;

Surely there's some of my kids tasty meals still in here somewhere

    Sunrise at Kyabra Creek

On to the Black Stump Oil Field Road to Eromanga

Being an oil field road it's bitumen

Must always keep watch for aliens though.........................kangaroos taking aim on the lead rider

The furtherest town in Oz from the sea

    Cheapest fuel too..................................strange.....hey?????????????

Another rest break for "the Old C---s"

Then we found the Noccundra Hotel

You can tell it's old by the height of the doorways

Now off to Innaminka via the Burke & Wills "Dig here tree"..........patience while the dust settles

The inscryption is now nearly overgrown

Being an emotional moment it was time to salute "one shoe Wayne"

Now there's a happy little Horticulturalist with history in his hand

Amazingly enough the Cooper Creek flows past

    Heading out to Innaminka

Unfortunately our sightseeing excapades placed us behind this roadtrain for some 40 kms

But when he eventually noticed us, he slowed & let us past

    Innaminka Hotel..........................that'll clear the dust

    Better check the weather

The conclusion of a pilgrimage for Rick to find the grave of his great uncle
    at Innaminka

Innaminka "Common" ....camping by the Cooper

Not that Hawk again................................must be the B.O.

Packing for the "easy trip" down the Old Strzelecki Track according to our guide

Doesn't look that bad in clear air

But under the cover of dust!!!!!!

    Looks Ok from this angle

Oh No!!!!.....................not the Tiger again??????....................That's gotta be another minus 1

Passing the Strzelecki Oil & Gas Fields

    Riding through the Strzelecki Desert

Of all things to find in a desert!

    Tickets please!

The roller coaster road into Cameron Corner (Queensland, New South Wales & South Australian state border)

Left overs? ................................hey guys.........I've only got water!!!!!.....wanna trade?

What? ..............only water!!!!..............my wines worth it now isn't it?.... said The Wise O' C---

Now!............. who has the last laugh??????

Left overs?????................didn't think we had that much wine & port left over

Final dirt.........................a moments silence please......................YES!!!!.........YES!!!!............... we survived

As we road the bitumen............."Bot rot" started to set in

"I can fix that".................... piped up "Brampton Island Rick"

We have to head home now .................there's no more room for stickers on my screen

    The final Salute

I always wonder about camping down under. I saw on TV once that you guys have like 7 of the worlds 10 deadliest snakes down under. If that's true, how in the world do you ever sleep at night when camping? And why would you sleep without a tent to keep them slithery demons away?

    I Masterbrewer,

Another great report. I forwarded the Hattah report link to some friends. We are going to the deserts in mid August (over a lot of the same country as in this report) and our warm up is in Hattah over the Queens Birthday weekend in June, so your report has us inspired.

    Cheers
