    Hey,

I am an avid rider (fleet of harley's and KTM 950)

I am also a 5th grade teacher. I am working on a science project for my students exploring sands and soils of the world. Thought I might take a chance and see of any fellow riders might consider picking up samples of interesting sands and or soils from travels.

All I need is a small sample about 1/4 cup or 30ml. (Although I can use additional quantities for trade with sand collectors.) I specifically desire sample from historical sites or scenic landmarks.

If you are considering this I would entertain the possibilities of trades from Texas. (I also wrote a little book about a trip I took to Alaska in the 90's that I would trade...)

PM me if there are any willing volunteers...

    Thanks

    AL

Checking in from Wisconsin. I could send a sample from glacial Lake Wisconsin or the glacial bed of the Wisconsin River. Oh, and how about Lake Superior? That would give me a reason for another road trip... ;)
Edit: Boy, I bet this will add new meaning to "go pound sand"...

i could probably get some from a crater were we dropped a 500lb bomb on some taliban.

or i can just walk outside and scoop some.

How about some from the great state of Arizona. Also called the Land of Sand. You have several possible options that I may be able to help with. From Sonoran desert sand to mountain sand, may even be able to obtain some from that big hole in the ground up in the northern end of the state. I think they call it the Grand Canyon. Hopefully someone will help out with some Meteor Crater sand.

Cool. Glad to see I'm not the only one looking for various sands. I've driven all over the Mid Atlantic region just to visit pits and quarries and collect samples of different types and colors.

I make architectural precast concrete products and the color and type of sand we use in the various mixes changes the look of the product quite a lot. Sometimes I've found a sand we really like and after using it for a few years the pit will hit a new vein and the color will change. We will have to discontinue offering that mix as it is usually not possible to find a suitable substitute.

So far I've found Williamsport, PA has a rich dark brown sand almost the color of ground coffee. Berks county PA has a nice maroon colored sand. Maryland sands are in the blonde/neutral range for the most part with a few pits running more orange. Some stuff out of Delaware is more tan. I was getting some really nice stuff out of Virginia the color of brown sugar. That pit hit another vein and cannot supply that color any longer. Too bad since that made a pretty mix and was one of our best sellers. I also got a couple of truckloads of a nice yellow ochre colored sand (the distributor would not tell me where they got it). Made a nice creamy yellowish tone in the mix but that pit is also into another vein and I've not been able to find a substitute.

A bit long winded but it's a cool project and something I think about often!
