I met up with Bob and Allen at the South end of 510. You may notice their bikes are a bit dirtier than mine...they took a shortcut to our meeting place. We rode up to Thomas Rock which looks out on Lake Independence, Big Bay and Lake Superior. Great view! Nice sunny day but it never got out of the 40s so a bit chilly in the wind. We went into Big Bay and had lunch at the Thunder bay Inn and shot the breeze. I cruised back home on pavement while Bob and Al went looking for an alternate dirt option South. Thanks for coming guys!

This destination ride was a good excuse to get out...glad I did. I'll post up another one soon. Hopefully somewhere in the UP others would like to go. The idea is no pressure or commitment, if you feel like riding to the destination on the designated date and time, great...you may meet other Yooper Adventurers. Type of bike and route is your choice.

I was cutting wood south of Thompson yesterday and it was decent as long as you were working. I bet it was chilly on a bike farther north.

The wind off of Lake Superior was cold but wIth the sun out, it wasn't bad in the woods at lower speeds. For the faster road sections, I turned my heated gear on and stayed pretty comfortable. When I think of South of Thompson, I think of either Lake Michigan or the back way into Garden. Do you have a place over there?

A friend of mine has a place off Little Harbor Road (The back way east out of Garden that runs up to Thompson.) that I trade some labor and maintenance tasks in exchange for using as a base to ride from.

The wind was howling pretty good down there from the northwest all day yesterday.

I headed for home this morning about 5:30 MI time and in all my years of making that trip have never seen as many deer as I saw this morning. No less than 50 between Thompson and Crooks on US 2. It was unreal. Raising the speed limit should be interesting.

Quick question for the U.P guys. How are the black/saddle flies so far? Thinking about riding/camping up there next week ( coming from Colorado), but I've only got three days. I've had my share of U.P. black flies, would prefer to not add more.

It's been too cold for them yet in the Marquette area. I was over in northern Luce County last weekend, and they were just starting to buzz about. I guess it all depends on if it warms up or not in the next few days.

Just bring a head net and you'll be fine. :evil

Any day now. It seems that the black flies, like the hummingbirds, return right around mother's day.

    Cheers,
    Dave

The sylvania ski trails are legal to ride outside of watersmeet. They are not actually part of the wilderness area. They are just called that because of the ski rental outfit just west of watersmeet.Fun trails.Grew up riding them and many more in that area.

Selling one of my xs650, s this sunday.Going to go with the heed bars also and some other stuff with the money.I was looking on ebay and there seems to be different models. Some have lower crashbars and some don't. I think I will go your route with the big bash plate.Been lucky so far that I have not broke much. Also how is your front tire holding up?.My 804 is kind of squirly in sand but would like to get at least 5000 out of a front tire. Will be in Marquette saturday to race the loose moose.

Official source for what trails are open to motorized use (Ottawa MVUM). The inset describes the dates the trail is open.

The GPS maps reflect the data on the MVUM saving a lot of time figuring things out on the ground. :D

Still happy with the Heed bars/Bumot skidplate. Provides great coverage. I have testing the skidplate on plenty of rocks, and it has held up just fine. I have NOT tested the crash bars......yet!

Loving the Motoz so far. I have 1,500 miles on them so far, and they show zero sign of wear. The only weak spot I have noticed is the front in really deep sand. Could use a bit more side knob.

I head out Saturday morning for the annual guy's fishing trip.

I want to give a heads up to cycle city honda yamaha in Escanaba.I was a little mad on my spoke issue but they covered me on a very serious fork issue and bad dimmer switch on my Africa Twin (go to last couple pages of AT suspension thread for the drama).I wIll buy more bikes there because they covered these problems without drama. The service manager there is a rare breed and highly skilled.

I'm up here in St. Ignace this week with the wife. We drove over to Curtis for some wine tasting and I caught the bug to bring my DR350 up in a couple weeks for a long weekend of dirt and camping. How is the trail system up by Grand Marais? And the system south of Au Train? I'm thinking a site at Muskellonge State Park for three nights of trail self abuse should be plenty. Trails system conditions? Sand, rocky, rutted conditions? Any other recommendations for food and sightseeing would be great too.

Go to vvmapping.com and take a look at their online trail guide. Lots of good information. If you are interesting in gps guided dual sports I can point you to my track catalog. http://dco43054.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=2
