Ural spin on oil filter upgrade

    Spin on filter upgrades have always been a popular modification for bikes with cartridge filters, and an often requested change for Urals.
    In an effort to meet customer demand, a spin on filter will be standard for 2014, but the new front engine cover won't work with older rigs as it has no place for the ignition unit. While most of the changes for the 2014's will be too cost prohibitive for upgrading, IMWA saw that it would be feasible to offer a modified front cover with ignition housing for older rigs.
    With the new 2014 being the focus of their attention, they requested that I test a prototype unit on my rig, which naturally I am more than happy to do.

    Here are the 2 main components and the filter, this and a couple of gaskets are all that's necessary to upgrade.
    A wild guess going by the price of the standard parts, I would guess the kit will be around $250, but that is just a guess at this point as IMWA doesent even know exactly what it will cost to manufacture.

    The filter is up fairly high safe from debris and impact, it will clear the crossover on the OE exhaust, and looks like it will clear the Raceway 2 into 1 header. All 3 types of skidplates will clear. Not sure about the Powerarc ignition.
    The filter is a Napa Gold 7207 filter available at auto parts stores, and cross references to several other brands.

    I think its really cool that IMWA has taken the time to make this happen for those of us with older rigs so we aren't completely left out of all the upcoming changes. IMO it sends a clear message we won't be forgotten.

    This is the first prototype for testing, so it may not be exactly the same as the production unit.

    I don't get it, but I'm a Ural noob. Why? Why change your existing bike over to this? Is it that much of a time saver? Money saver for filters?

    My guess would be better filtration for less money, takes about 30 seconds to change, no tools required, filter can be had locally and is of better quality. If it accepts the stock Ducati ignition then it should also work with the Power Arc. I'm game for one when they become available. :1drink

    The first time you change the oil, you will understand.
    Its a tight squeeze to get the filter in and out, and way too easy to burn yourself on the exhaust.

    Well.....technically.... its a superior filter, how that translates into the real world, I don't care to speculate, but I don't see how it would effect the service interval requirements.

    IMO, the real benefit is the ease and convenience of a spin on filter, and that requires no explanation.

    Logic escapes me: a better filtration system "should" allow more intervall between filter change?

    Yes, the oil will be cleaner, but that has nothing to do with thermal and mechanical breakdown of the oil or depletion of the additives that protect the engine.

    Just out of curiosity, will this retro to the 650's as well? I don't have my Ural (yet) and wasn't sure of the similarities/differences between the 650/750 cases and oiling systems.

    Because cartridge filters suck. This is an unexpected surprise from IMWA. Can't wait for it to be released.
