I'm planning a trip in late April from Philadelphia to Jacksonville. Since I have made this trip innumerable times on I-95, I, like many others, am looking for a more enjoyable alternative, Not worrying about time so much as more pleasurable riding. The Coastal Highway, US 17, looks nice on the map, but many have posted about how built up and congested it is. Is US 15 a better alternative?

I think I'll do just that. US 15 from Gettysburg to Walterboro, SC, then about 50 miles south on I-95, then get on US 17 just north of Savannah and ride it down to JAX. Maybe break it up into three days.

US 17 may get boring - my recollections from a dozen or so years back are that it is pretty much all coastal marshes from Dismal Swamp in VA on down to Jax when you are not going through towns.

You could head a little more southwest from Philly and pick up Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway and ride it all the way if you have the time. From the south end of the BRP, I like to jump over to US 441 and run from Smoky Mountains NP down into GA. 441 can take you all the way down to Mcrae GA, is 4 lane and under utilized much of the way, and decent scenery. You now bypass lots of little towns and bigger ones like Athens & Milledgeville GA. In McRae, take US 23 south to Jax.

(I'm from middle GA, and run US 23 between Jax and Macon a lot. And use 441 when it is going in the right direction for rides up into the mountains.)

    Hey, Mark
I like your Skyline Drive/BRP idea, but am saving that for one or two trips I'll be making down to Cashiers, NC this year. However, US 441 from that area south to FL looks good. I'll keep that in mind if or when I do a Philly/Cashiers/JAX loop in the future.

I'm in Jax NC and travel 17 south to Jax Fl a couple times a year. I like it. It is coastal marshes, but there are some things to look at. Plantations abound S of Myrtle beach and you can bypass myrtle if you like.

Patriots Point is neat to see and to me there are lots of cool historical things around Charleston.

From me to Savannah is 4 lane divided highway almost the whole way. When I get S of Savannah, I usually get on 95 and finish up. S of Charleston it's a bunch of small towns and some that aren't very nice. You can follow it all the way into Fl if you like, that's up to you.

PM me if I can answer specific questions. I live 3 miles from 17 here.
