    Hi,

For those interested: Using MapSource under Linux is very well possible ... including the fully operational data transfer via the USB port! :clap

Since I wanted to try out virtualization for quite a while, a recent thread in the German NaviBoard forum triggered my curiosity. In a nutshell: It took me about one evening (this includes installing MS Windows XP and MapSource in the virtual machine), then I could use MapSource and connect to the GPSr.

I have put a relatively detailed description on my homepage. Please note that this covers Fedora 8 only - installation notes for Ubuntu can be found in the thread above, and the necessary steps for other distros can probably be derived from the description there :D (... anyway, the key difference is the activation of the access to the USB filesystem).

    Joerg,
Thanks for posting this. I was JUST thinking about this. Garmin is windows only (Mac too?) but I hate booting into windows just to use it. I will check out your links and give it a go.

Wine is supposed to be able to do it, but haven't had any luck making that happen as of yet. :dunno

I tried to get mapcreate6 to work with Wine this eve and failed, installed perfectly. But when it came time to run. it died with ActiveX error '429' and died. :cry
I'm installing Virtualbox now. XP is installing on it. Till I can get it figured out with wine. Seems to be a mystery error, might be related to VB6 but not sure.

Hey Joern - What's happening?:ear We were just talking about you and how we haven't heard much out of you since your trip.

    Everything OK?

There is this this archive site http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/agree.html

I do have 6.13.4 I can send you if need be. 6.13.7 works well, too. The latest version is a resource hog.

Cool, no need to send it, I could pick it up the next time we see. BTW, I couldn't find it in the download section.

Oh DOH. The Garmin support site is so ....... well, lets not mention this.

Anyway, I looked at the latest download link, and figured why not, they might not quite know what they are doing. Typed in the right version, and tada, got it .

But using a virtual machine still requires that you install and have a Windows OS somewhere. Kind of misses the point imho. This is one of the reasons I still use paper maps. :D Why can't Garmin (and others) just do a version that works on linux right away..?

To each his own... I'd rather have a solution than no solution at all (paper maps). Windows 7 RC is a free download, as is VMware Server. This is a no cost solution for now.

    Resurecting this thread:

I have had no trouble getting Mapsource running in VM, but I can't connect my 60CS. The first time I plugged it in, the XP machine recognized the device and installed a driver. Now I can't get it to show up. When I plug it in, I hear the Windows tone for a new device, but that's it.

    Any tips or suggestions?

NEVERMIND - Found a work around.

Go to Device Manager (right click on My Computer and then click on "Manage" then select eh Device Manager under System Tools). Disable the Garmin Driver, then re-enable it. That fixed it.

It's already described on my page, too - look under "USB Reset". Essentially the same as you do, but faster (command-line).
