This really hurts to admit. Santa came early, just in time for the snow.

The one has a NOS setup. I told my son not to even think about it.

That used to be my mantra, until I saw what 100cc did to the KLX.

You can teach an ole dog new tricks.

Yeah, a 30% increase in your case. But making an XR400 into a 440 will provide nominal gain, more expense, and the loss of OEM function.

XR400s that are modified to 440 almost invariably eat second and third gears. Back in the day two friends did it, one blew second and one blew third. XR 400s last forever stock and are time bombs when hot rodded. Just my experience.

Thanks for the advice on the big bore... I'm not in a hurry to do anything on it since it's a parts bike and mine is fine, although it is tempting!

"Power corrupts. Absolute power absolutely corrupts"

    Someone said that. Sounded heavy.

I'm pretty sure it was not a KLR owner.:dunno

Wrenching is good but who's up for some riding out in the west desert? thinking of some exploration!

Also, need someone who is good with CRF450x valves, to walk me through valve adjustment.

Buy a manual, buy the Hotcams shim kit. It's an easy bike to adjust valves on. Cyclepedia.com has good online manuals.

Don't skimp on the shim kit. It's about $80 and will save you a ton of time driving back and forth to the stealership. You can sell the shim kit with the bike when the time comes.

Just because we're doing big bore kits it doesn't mean we'll have XR440Rs! I know Honda makes oversized piston and rings just for this kind of scenario (the scenario being 2 ADVers screwing up their engines before buying a new one).

I'll take my top end to lindsay machines and put it back in the bike. I think that engine has a lot to give still. I doubt it'll add that much power as to eat the transmission, I doubt it'll add any power at all, actually.

Watch out on those 450x valves. The intakes may be near the limit and require new ones from kibblewhite. You are welcome to bring it over to my garage and we can dive in one evening. Our sister 450x's would enjoy some time together too. I have heat in the garage and shims (though as trackhead said having your own set is a cheap investment).

At our altitude the power output of the 440 should still be less than the stock 400cc at sea level, which theoretically, the transmission was designed for, right?? :ear

    Pilo,
thanks for the offer. I'd really love to check your 450x out! See if you have any other tips and tricks that I haven't already done on my bike.

What's your schedule like for the next week or weekend?

I had to pee twice trying to finish reading that. I found using my
grand daughter's diapers as a "Mini Depends" gives me a few extra
seconds and stops the trouser tracks.

    Is that too much information?

It's just about time to bring the Rhino down from the lake and
start making geriatric tracks at 5 Mile.:gerg

I'm buying one of these this summer. 1400lbs, 700cc motor, manual transmission, locking differential, heated cab, etc, etc.......tracks (Tatou snow tracks) are pricey at $3600.

That has YOU written all over it.:D

We will then have a rescue vehicle in the ADV pool. Cool.
