Thank for the clarification! I'll have to swing by and snag those lenses one of these nights.

How many miles should I get out of my V-Strom chain? I've got 17,000 on there now and it's getting noisy at crawling speeds. The sprockets look fine though.

Don't go by mileage Kev, conditions, type of riding, etc. It's hard to judge by mileage.

Check your roller surfaces for pitting, etc. Check for tight links, missing O-rings, etc. And measure the pin to pin distance.

Here's a good site with better info: http://www.motorcycleanchor.com/motorcycle/how_to/mc_chains.html

Replace. That's good mileage out of a factory chain.

    +1

The problem I had with my VStrom chain was that it stretched at different rates in different places along its length. Replace it before it chews up your sprockets.

Chains don't actually stretch anymore... The O-rings, x-rings, z-rings, or whatever type of chain you have, get squished and compressed to the point they lose their elasticity allowing the chain to move having slop front to rear... we still think of them as stretching out but either way it's time to replace. One the rings are shittied up they no longer function as they should. Be sure to replace your sprocket at the same time!

Should have been read in your best Cliff Claven voice...

+1 on changing the sprocket when you change the chain; otherwise you risk damaging the new chain...so I have heard.

Should we make that both sprockets? Or does the counter sprocket wear at such a decreased rate that it is fielders choice. And how does that counter sprocket tooth count factor into the equation since the smaller ones seem to accelerate wear.....:ear
