I suppose I need to do the Ute Cup before I die, or it dies. As you know Richard and I have been going to CO every year now for quite a few years and Jarred was with us last year. Some year I just need to do the Ute instead.

I should go ride it again too,Shan left my name off (I tied for 40th with someone & it was missed ) in the Trials Comp. magazine posting of the results & my local riding group still don't believe I road it. How is that for a good reason to go back? I'm retiring June 30th not sure it will be this year but look out next year!

At the base of the weathered post (middle picture), you can just see a ~3" threaded pipe looking thing. In there was bunch of sheets of lined paper with names and home states all the folks who had visited the top of the mountain. Felt like finding scroll from Lord of the Rings. I'm pretty sure we signed it. Wonder if that is still up there?! I remember that clearly, but I can't remember the name of the mountain! Thanks for bringing back great memories Jim!

Hey! You're right, I remember that now. I think one guy who signed it just a few days before us was like 82 years old or something... there was a pencil in there and it was a plastic PVC tube with screw-off cap and a cable tied it to that post.... Correct?

Signed up for the 2017 Ute Cup. I was signer #72 yesterday. I read somewhere it was cap'd at 100. Now to get my hands on a spark arrestor. Have my Colorado OHV sticker on order. I'm hoping to find a local bald mountain to watch the Solar Eclipse from on Monday after the meet.

    Cool thread!

My last and only Ute Cup was 1989.

Me and several riders were on the then-new 305 Fantics. Grimeca rear hubs were failing that year. My bike's rear hub was kind enough not to self destruct, but into the first 13 miles my kick-start gear failed. Had one helluva time push starting the bike and thereafter had to keep it running the whole time, which being air cooled meant it was running hot and poorly.

I had stupidly worked physically hard at the NM cabin the week before. That was good for acclimatization, but I was already tapped out by the start of the event! The one-after-the-other stream sections wore me down and it became gasp and survive.

On the way back to the cabin, in the San Luis Valley, the heater core on the lemon Ford Aerostar let go, misting the windshield with antifreeze. Clamped off the heater core hoses and drove another half hour when the harmonic balancer bolts sheared off! An hour later I had one bolt back in and limped the last two hours back. This vehicle was later totalled in a wreck, thank God!

I have since never made it back to a Ute Cup and this year it corresponds to a family event. But I want to do another one. I'd be 29 years older, but both bike and transportation vehicle will be better!

And the Shorty gets to come to his first Ute!

La Garrita is just awesome, and well worth a trip in its own right. Hard to follow the trails without the Busch brothers leading. Kevin and Kieth set one hell of a trial.

The eclipse will be much more complete there than at home.

Our first Ute, Kevin and Kieth came and found our sorry asses when we ran out of gas way the hell down country in the pouring rain. I was afoot maybe a mile from my bike, hiking for camp when they rolled up, and got to ride the back of Kevin's XR650 back to my bike. Terrifying. Still my favorite Ute Cup experience.
