    Head gasket on mine too at 20K. Recurrent problem on several triumph models in early 2000s. The original gaskets were not ideal, replacement is better from what I understood.

    Those of us who have an early 2000's are there any symptoms we should watch out for?

    I have these bags and they are well made and definitely water proof. An hour long downpour at speed was a great test. No leaks! They fit the stock hard cases without issue and make travel a snap.

    Bought me a 05 Tiger last weekend, lucifer orange, 7k miles, very nice, plan on checking MPG soon, biggest horse power bike Ive owned, before making the purchase I googles the seat height, it was about half inch-ish of my dr 650, but the seat is wider so Im still one my toes at a red light, so far thats the only draw back found.

    I had a DR650 before my tiger. I feel like the Tiger is everything I liked about the DR, but I can actually ride the highway with it.

    Do you think the sprint front cog and lower rpms may have helped as you pondered earlier in the thread?

    Maybe. A fresh oil and filter change right before I left couldn't have hurt either.

    It is very clean, I don’t know much about the displaced liner. My take on it is the cylinder liners may have been disturbed when he replaced the head gasket. I’m afraid of the worst though. Cracked or warped head. Now I need to find a good parts source. No dealers where I’m at.

    It would almost be easier to do a salvage motor transplant, and probably not that much more expensive.

    If I could find a good salvage engine for under 500.00 I might consider that route, but I am going do a compression test, drain the fluids and see what that tells me first. Then I'll tear into the top end, have the head checked for warping, cracks and at least replace all the valve seals. I'm not too afraid of going that far, My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.;)

    I have yet to learn how to post pics, really need to tho, I dont see getting rid of my DR, I just like the bike, its more my kind of machine but have to say Im dig'n the Tiger more all the time, just do see it doing much in the way of off road riding, to much bike to be picking up from the ground.

    I was planning up upgrading my stock bags to Hepco Becker because I have several sets of Gobi's so I could minimize my up front costs by just buying the racks first and getting better cases later. However I found photos online of a 955i with H&B racks and Gobi bags and discovered that the design of the rack seems to carry the bags very high. It looks like I'd even have trouble throwing my leg over it. The top of the Gobi's look in the picture to be 3-4 inches higher than the top of the rear seat!

    If anyone has used Hepco Beckers on a 955i and has a photo to show that it not as bad as it looks, I'm all ears (eyes). If it is too high as I suspect, then the only other racks that seem to be still available in the US are Happy Trail. I'm not a huge fan of their racks--they're a bit ugly--and there do seem to be a number of complaints online about fit, so I don't know if that's an issue. I'm interested in their bags either but they do sell Givi adapters for their racks. I have a set of the 1st generation plastic trekkers that would mount right up, though the racks with Givi adapters are close to $400 without any bags.

    Has anyone gone this route? I was also looking and I like the Givi Dolomiti or the Kappa K-Venture bags (I much prefer top load to clamshell, the plastic trekkers are halfway between each.) Both are reasonably priced and use a modified version of the Givi mount. The Givi wedge is removed and there are two holes for twist locks. Has anyone looked into modifying the Happy Trail to work with the modified mount for the Dolomiti?

    (I have a 10 day, 3000mile trip coming up in July, and I was originally planning to get by with the stock tiger luggage. The side cases are pretty small but the stock top case is pretty big so between the three, I wasn't worried about 10 days worth of clothes. Unfortunately, this weekend, the topcase tumbled a few feet onto concrete and the top shattered into several pieces, so now I need to spend money when I wasn't planning to, and I need to choose which direction to go so I don't spend money on one option and later decide I bought the wrong stuff.)

    My girly had a steady 5.6L/100 kms in the past 2 seasons. After winter storage (battery removed, bike in heated garage), gas consumption is going significantly up, almost 8L/100 kms.
    I don't understand why. It starts and runs perfectly. Valves were adjusted less than 10000 kms ago. Tires are new (Mitas E07) but can not explain such a difference. Any ideas ?
