Going to give it a go again this year over the Canada Day weekend...

The loose plan is to do 4 days of off HWY riding and camping on upper Vancouver Island... This will be a caravan style ride where we camp at a new spot each night on our way out to the west coast of the Island north of the Brooks Peninsula... Riders should be self sufficient and able to pack all the required camping and cooking gear on their bikes... A fuel range of 300KM is recommended for the loop out from the last gas in Port Alice before you see fuel again... I'll preride the route in the upcoming weeks and supply the GPS tracks so riders can do their own navigation... This allows for splitting into smaller groups to minimize dust...

Weather can always play a role so if it looks like a terrible forecast for the destination, I'll either use an alternate destination or postpone the ride... If anyone is interested I'll get your name on the list...

Here is part 1 of a video from last years ride:
    <iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VPkWGV-Ddk8" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" width="853"></iframe>

This years route will be big bike friendly but there will be some steeper terrain on the day 3 alternate route which can be opted out of... Also on day 3 there will be an optional B section that the more experienced riders may want to take on the way to that nights camp...

The plan for this year will be:

    Day 1 Fri
I will put the first nights camp close to the hwy near Woss so it will be easy to find for riders coming in Friday evening... For those that can make it earlier in the day we will meet up at the Cambell River chevron station near the hwy 28 cutoff and spend the day riding back roads before joining the rest of the group at the evening campsite ...

    Day 2 Sat
Take in the back roads from Woss to Port Alice for fuel and then out to the west coast to camp the night at one of the beaches...

    Day 3 Sun
Return back to Port Alice taking in an alternative route, fuel up and then take a different backroad route heading south camping the night in the Bonanza Valley...

    Day 4 Mon
Homeward day, those that want to B -line it can take the hwy... Those that haven't had enough of the dust can do another half day of it on the way to Cambell River...

Riders should be self sufficient with their own camping supplies, cooking gear and campsite meals... We will be in a small center at least one time per each day of the ride...Here you will be able to purchase fuel and a meal for the evening campsite and also hit a restaurant for lunch... The centers we will pass through on this ride are Gold River, Woss, Port Alice and back to through Woss on the last day...

Could the riders on the list let me know if you can make it for a Friday noon meet up in Cambell River... And those that would meet that evening at the Campsite near Woss...
The first RV will be on Friday around 12:30 PM at the chevron located in Cambell River right at the HWY 19/28 junction... The Second RV will be at the Friday night Camping area for riders coming late: It is located about 3 KM north of the Woss junction just off HWY 19... Follow the powerline trail left off the highway and keep your eye out for a trail branching off to the left, take it and follow this trail to the end and that is camp...

    Gunner;
I might be interested in this depending on my schedule.

I watched the video, so I have a couple of questions.....

At 2:46 a bug flies by the camera, if that is a mosquito, we're in trouble.

When you pre-ride the course, can you remove any large rocks?

This ride looks like it might be a lot of fun??

    Cheers!

Wow, you must of watched it in hi def to catch that bug, either that or slow motion...Yes, it was a mosquito and it had lots of friends ...

No can do, the rocks stay, I was thinking about adding some more...

If the weather co-operates and the ride group doesn't get too large it should be a lot of fun...

We stayed in this campsite in the late 90s when I worked in the area until the bears chased us out.... The ripped the door off the camper, then the fridge and stole one of my co-workers chicken dinners... Speaking of bears we saw 11 on the day..

Yep, actually he did 300 KMs with no reserve needed because we were not willing to wait till 10AM for the gas station to open... He has a 17liter Clarke tank installed and I could of transferred if he ran out...

This is a video that I put together from the weekend scouting mission... A lot has changed since I was last out that way, but both the routes still look to be big bike friendly {unless your uncomfortable with heights}...

Whadaya in the navy or something?

I don't think it's possible to come up with a date that works for everyone... I figured a long weekend would allow an extra day for most and safety wise also give one more day of logging truck free roads... When you get out past Port Alice pretty much any logging truck you'll encounter will be a fat truck with the big loads and the wide bunks.. .Not having to compete for road space with them is an added bonus...

I hope my cousin who I'll connect with in Nanaimo....then we'll drop in to see some more family in Courtenay area, maybe lunch at "Dicks" in Campbell River, or the Cable House in Sayward...who can we look forward to connecting with...this can be a GREAT TIME.
Am even thinking of buying some Tactical Bacon for this adventure!

The first RV will be on Friday Morning around 10:30 -11:00 at the chevron located in Cambell River right at the HWY 19/28 junction... The Second RV will be at the Friday night Camping area for riders coming late: It is located about 3 KM north of the Woss junction just off HWY 19... Follow the powerline trail left off the highway and keep your eye out for a trail branching off to the left, take the left and follow this trail to the end and that is camp...

I have not completed the GPS tracks yet as some of the routes are still snowed in and as always I like to preride everything to make sure the plan will be workable... I'll be out there this weekend...

If your on the list and have PMed me your Email I will forward you the GPS route when it is ready..

I will put together a GPS track in the next few days for day 1 and day 2 ... The route I would like to use for day 3 is still snowed in so I will wait a couple of weeks to see if it is going to melt enough to pass through..

Still lots of white in the hills..

After churning through a couple of patches we came onto solid snow with still nearly 1000' of elevation gain to go forcing us to turn back...

I sent out a GPX track file to those E-mail addresses that I have on hand... This file covers part of the route, when or if the snow melts I will supply the rest or add an alternate after a preride... If you have not received a track file and would like one please forward your E-Mail address via a PM...
