Here's a little something EXTRA that I did to prevent my cases from falling off.

DRILL a small hole through the OUTSIDE latch and the INSIDE base and insert an R CLIP through both.

Latching mechanism can't OPEN even under the toughest conditions.

    Hope this helps.

My son has unlatched this a few times with his boots somehow but it has never seemed like they were going to fall off. In order for that to happen, I would need to snap 2 bungy cords, have the tent and duffle bag fall off, the yellow button would have to be pressed, the handle lifted, red button raised, raise the other red lever (the one that is hard to raise in the first place) then hit a big ass bump for the case to lift off it's mounts (3 mounts) perfectly squarely and simultaneously in order for the case to fall off. Unlikely that the planets would ever align that way but...

    It's a cool idea. I think I might do it.:freaky

Or...you would simply have to be HUMAN and NOT properly latched the vario to the 'mushroom' bolt...as I (don't tell anybody) did yesterday and LOST my RH Vario! One big bump and Mr. Vario jumped ship (totally without my awareness).:evil :evil

they don't stay on well without that bolt......

Another tip, spend a few minutes adjusting the height of the mushroom bolt so that when you snap the latch into the locked position it seats nice and tight. Then use some blue locktite on the mushroom bolts. When I first got mine, the would loosen up over time and the bags would move around a little bit. I could see how that situation would lead to loosing them.

Also, if you have the Vario top case, a medium sized silicone bumper pad (sold for keeping cupboard doors from banging shut) stuck to the mounting plate just aft of where the case engages with the base plate on either side will keep it from rattling.
