would you mind giving a ride report on your fly and ride? I am thinking of doing the same thing and would like some guidance on the whole process.
That'd be a fun trip!
I picked up my new-to-me 2012 on Friday. I drove up to the dealer in Portland, paid for it, loaded it in my truck, drove back to Salem to the DMV, waited around for 45 minutes and got my plate. Then went home, unloaded it, and spent the next hour installing my GPS mount. Then I went riding. :)
Any of you inmates pick-up a 2002 DL1000 in Stuart, FL last summer?
It had a VSRI 027 sticker on the rear taillight. I miss my old girl and just wanted to know if she went to a good home.

Hi guys, I just got my first DL650 and I am going to install a 12v plug in the fairing. what wires are best to tap into?
If you want it to be hot all the time, just run the wires direct to the battery. If you want it to be switched, you should install a relay. It's easier than it sounds. You can get one for about $5 at an auto parts store. Basically, you connect the relay to ground, battery hot, and to a switched 12v connection, like the license plate light or something. Then you have one or two prongs on the relay to run to accessories, like your 12v outlet. That's how I set mine up, along with my GPS.
After modding the vee to within an inch of its life, it's sold and I bought glitch_oz's Thinstrom
+1, but I did do it a little different. I used the factory plug for the heated grips to trip the relay, the relay runs power to a small fuse panel that powers my heated grips and two 12v outlets. One for my phone the other for my net book. I used an auxiliary lighting relay for spotlights and such that the 4wd crowd uses. It's rated for 150w constant and 300w max, and I don't think there is 150w extra power to even use so I don't think it will burn out.
Where is the factory plug for the heated grips?
I put a Powerlet jack in the right side dashboard panel, wiring it through a 30 amp fuse directly to the battery. It's hot all of the time so that my GPS doesn't shut down at fuel stops, plus I use it as an input to the battery when the bike sits on the trickle charger.
Heated clothing? What's that? The heater in my Subaru works just fine.
The plug is up above the radiator, sometimes even tucked slightly behind. It's two wires an orange with green tracer and a black and white wire (ground). I extended those wires to run back to where I have the relay and fuse panel mounted.
Today this morning at work a co-worker asked me if I had bought a bike yet.
He added that he was looking into the V-Strom.
I said. Ohh, the owners really like them,
the 2nd thing that went into my head was 19" tires. So I said that.
then was the tank. 5.3 gallons.
I said the only negative thing was the ABS cannot be turned off.
He was not sure about the 19" tires.
But said, "A really big gas tank."
And he said he was just going to use it to jump curbs.
I revisted the bike and saw the potintial. Then I looked in the Adventure and really saw the potinital!
I like everything I see except a couple of things.
High center of gravity. the NCX and the BMW have spoiled this potintial buyer.
The weight is heavy. the Mighty DR at 366lbs has again spoiled me. Even the G650GS comes in at less than 430lbs wet.
Why this bike would fit me: I have a very mellow relaxed touring personality. I actually think I could get low 60s on fuel while cruising in 6th gear (50-55mph). I'd take it fairly easy off road. Just forest road exploration and getting to camp sites.
My heavens, the Adventure comes with nearly everthing I'd need!
And its covered under the warrenty.
And you get a hell of a bargain compared to buying it seperatly!
I'd take the storage containers off, but switch them out for bags that fit more snuggly and offer more better fuel economy. but, I'd but them back on for routine communting to the store.
the painners in the rear look like they would provide excellent protection in drops.
I've been resarching the Mighty DR and the little dr200se, so I'm confident the engines are good.
I like how Suzuki was realy frugal with the bike. They really went after a target audiance. No need for a cheapy bash plate. I agree. No need for over 6 inch of suspenion in the front. Agreed.
I've got to the point of going with a dr200se for a adventure touriing bike. But we all know the major negative to that bike.
I'd prefer to buy:
2. Ready to ride.
3. I do not mind spending a good amount of money on the intial purchase.
4. Want the bike to have good logistical support and reliablilty while on the road, and low maintenance.
These dual sport bikes just require too much time/money/effort to make them ride ready. I'm not interested in that.
sure, I could go with the 2011+ G650GS. the initial price is great for what you are getting. However, what's the point when you are paying $200 at the first 1,000km service? and the parts and labor are a drag on the adventure. And the battery is a piece of sh#t.
Furthermore, I thought the 2011 base, and 2012 Sertao was really rushed (beak finder would fall off) and did not like the way BMW handled the hot start issue. I do not want to support a business model like that.

You can get a cable from Eastern Beaver to allow this. $21.95 plus the cost of a switch.
Not a thing wrong with the 19" front wheel; but if he tries jumping curbs on it, he'll be buying lots of new wheels.. or a spoked wheel upgrade.
High center of gravity???? No way. That's the thing I LOVE about this bike -- the LOW center of gravity. I have a DR650 too and it feels no heavier than it, despite weighing 100 lbs more. This thing does NOT feel like it's 470 wet.

I read an article by MC news and they really thought the bike handles really well also.

I think the DL 650 is more for the street adventure touring person (90-10), and the KLR 650 is more for the dirt 80 street/20 dirt.
I like the 2008 KLR but a couple of things confuse me.
1. Seems like the L. cooled engine actually is a turn off for most riders. "one more thing to break while off roading." I read this a lot. And it seems like the Mighty DR has less over heating issues than the 2008 KLR. I don't get it.
2. If you are going to commit to going with tech, why not go with Fuel Injection?
3. I researched for several hours over the oil burning deal, and do not feel confident that the issue was fixed in 2009+. Riders are still putting in those 685 kits and T-bobs. :huh Like before, I do not want to support this business model.
With that typed, I understand while year after year the KLR is the champ of duel sports. I just do not like calling it an AK 47.
Back to the DL650 V-Strom. I think that the adventure bike goes up against the F700GS really well. the F700GS owner would need to spend up to $4,000 more to get the same stuff.
Furthermore, I like the base DL650 over the NC700X.
Not because of HP, or top speed. I really like the Honda engine!
but because of two things:
1. 19" tire.
2. ground clearance.
For a poser potinital buyer. Adventure and 17" tire just does not mesh well. Plus, the sump is really vulnerable.
Comparing the V-Twin to the 2008KLR is tuff.

What the DL lacks off road, it does really well on road. I mean the reviews have her really smooth and a good seat and solid wind protection.
Same thing with the KLR but in reverse.
For me, paying almost twice as much for the DL adventure over the KLR, AND dropping the speeds and riding on lighter and easier off-road terrian would be worth it.
I'm really lucky to be just now getting into the "adventure" touring market.
There are a lot of things to choose from. Almost too much. The 650 V-strom almost got by me!
There are two plugs, one is for light duty accessories and the other for the heated grips. This thread on stromtroopers has pics and all.
About to be an "X" Wee Strom owner. My baby has done me good, but its time to part ways. Can't keep her around anymore. If some guy knows a guy who knows a guy....
