Forgive my ignorance.........FR71?
FR = Forest road. Some of the more remote roads in the National Forest do not have names just numbers. FR71 leaves the Kelly stand closer to Stratton and goes down to Somerset.
I think FR71 is actually better than most of Kelly Stand. It is usually in worse shape but I like it that way. When Kelly Stand was closed at the west end it was fun. I have to get a go pro cam and get some pics. Something fun always seems to happen riding in that area.
Yeah I agree. While Kelly Stand is a must do, there are more interesting dirt road/ trails in Vermont.
and Troy, you know almost all of them!
Did you ride up to Cromag with Beez and I on the puppy dog and found that trail/road where the first covered bridge was closed? That was a nice spot.
Nope missed that. I do remember your story about it. This summer I’m planning a few long weekends to try to find some new routes to use for Cromag.
Oh man that sounds fun. I was thinking of the same idea. If you want some company just let me know. I am going to try to map out some more routes in the Northeast Kingdom also. Many plans going on in my head but the factor of time always seems to get in the way. I also recently picked up the map for the MABDR. Seriously thinking of that this summer. I would have to do it camping as funds are low this year.
That would be cool Lee. I'm going to sit down with my work calendar this week and map out weekends. I'll let you know and if any work for you we will do it.
Sounds like a plan. Look forward to it.
Forest Service Rd. 71, 05/210/2018
the whole road is fine. shoulders are soft and there are some downed trees/limbs too, so stay to the center.
ironically, the car i managed to unknowingly capture in the photo was the only vehicle i saw between where i entered in Searsburg and ended in Stratton.
Nice! I was riding in the Putney area and was going to try that but ran out of time. Putney Mt. Rd was very nice. They take great care of the dirt roads in VT. NH should learn from them.
Ok, headed down south next weekend. Is the access for FR71 off rt9? I see Kelly Stand on the map, anything else good? Class 3 or 4 preferred. Might swing over to Curtis BBQ in Putney if we can meander east on dirt roads!
The access is from Somerset rd off rt 9 west of Wilmington. Putney Mt. road is nice but not class 3or 4. I started exploring Bennett rd off Putney mt. Rd but it was a bit slick and I was running out of time but it looked hopeful. I want to try it again at some point. I was trying to get through Bemis Hill Rd in Athens and the end of the road in Athens had a power line down across it. It does look passable from the other end but can’t confirm it. Hartley hill road nearby has a great view near an old farm at the top of the hill. Is Curtis BBQ good? The Putney diner is good too. Josh rd. In West Halifax is a good class 4. It’s near the Puppy Dog route . Have a great ride!
Thanks! and yes, Curtis BBQ is very good.
Try rt100 to Upper Podunk rd to Stocker Farm rd....if you like stream crossings. I suggest entering that way to see what your getting into.
Podunk Rd...........I’m liking the sound of this already! I’ll look for it on my map.
Enjoy the first one is the worst
