I'm hoping I figured out my running rich problem.
Took a nice, head-clearing ride in the mountains with some friends on the V-Star today. We ate at the cafe at Spout Springs (better breakfast places available). When I got back, the temps weren't too bad so I decided to tackle the carbs. Pulled the tank and dug into the carbs. Diaphragms look good. No tears or pin holes. I dropped the needle one notch on the right carb. Put that carb back together.
Pulled the top off the left carb and removed the diaphragm slide and needle assembly. THE NEEDLE WAS SEIZED UP. For whatever reason (spring jammed?) the needle was not sliding freely. I pulled the spring and popped the needle up with pressure from my finger. I'm thinking this has to be the problem. We shall see. In any event, I dropped the needle one notch.
I haven't closed things up yet. Question is, in light of the stuck slide, should I just leave the needle clip settings where they were or leave them as I set them, dropped one notch? Worst case scenario, I'll run a little lean and have to dig back in and restore the needle clip positions.
With my dirt bikes I always error on the side of running on the rich side.

We shall see. I agree, err on the side of rich. Assuming the stuck needle is the problem, I may end up lean, but that's easy enough to fix by repositioning the needles. A 60 minute or less operation, now that I've done it once.
Id say give it a try like you have them and ride up in elevation like you were when it ran bad and see how it acts. Like you say you can always put them back where they were. Too lean would probably pop on deceleration like the KLR and DR 650's do when they come lean from the factory set to meet emitions. Fix is to raise the needle up 1-2 notches or put a shim under the circlip if it's not adjustable to raise it up.
Also was the needle stuck in the opened up throttle position or down in the idle position? If stuck in the opened up throttle position then thats definitely going to run rich as it would be pulling lots of fuel out even though you are idling , putting around at slow speed I think.

Personally, I would try it and see if it makes any difference.
As stated before, I like to run on the rich side personally.
Another option, after market exhaust.
I've found that my bikes run best for the range of elevations around here a little leaner than the "conventional wisdom" on advrider, but a little richer than factory settings. If the bike was factory stock when you started, it seems unlikely that leaner would be better considering the elevations.
Bike is not factory stock. A prior owner did a Canisteriectomy (removal of charcoal canister that causes some problems). Also appears to have mucked around with the airbox, as the vacuum outlet on the right carb that should run to the airbox is capped (along with the one that had been hooked to the canister).
Tank back on and it starts and idles well. I'll take her out for a ride and see what I think. I have new plugs in so we'll see if they get carboned up.
I am leaving for a little week long trip around parts of Oregon (the vast waste land as my lady friend puts it), so if there will be a meeting of us ADV hooligans this week I will miss it, just have to catch up with you all the following week.

Well, it's getting better. I got the carbs back together and popped in a new set of plugs this morning. Bike runs well. I decided to try it at altitude and took the pavement up to Tollgate. Rode pretty hard on the way up. My buddy behind me said it is still putting out some black smoke when I get on it, but not as much as before. I didn't have any of the stumbling issues I did last weekend, and the bike started right up without any problems when it was time to head back down. Filled up at the Co-Op when I got back to town. 3.5 gallons for 120 miles. 17 of those miles were pre-carb fix. Long and short, I got a mileage improvement of at least 24% over what I had before. Not bad but not totally satisfactory.
Next step is to replace the stock plug covers. I may still need to put in a more restrictive main jet but before I do that I want to dig into the airbox to see if prior owners mucked anything up in there.
I have 4 carbs for you to work on next. Just think, double the fun!!

Thought I'd throw an idea out for you Walla Walla area folks - hopefully you have seen this post - http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600458 - about the Wild West Rally. Perhaps a weekend ride to go and spectate and learn more about Rally Moto in your area would be a good weekend jaunt? Perhaps even sign up and volunteer to marshal a corner or two - best viewing and you get to ride the stage roads to see what they are really like.
Weekend of September 25-26 - camping at the fairgrounds or city park; local watering hole in Pomeroy. Other crazy DS riders to meet and talk racing with. Just up the 12 from you!
Better yet - enter - and see if you know the 'local' roads better than the guys coming across the state! Ask questions here or the other post if you're interested.
I may not make it tonight. I have an appointment at Tom's tomorrow to put a new rear tire on the V-Star and need to take the trailer hitch off, which means also taking off the bags.
Me neither, work has me in a tizzy so I've been putting in the midnight hours to get things done this month. rj
