Touratech is extending this invite: Please join us at this FREE event on Thursday night. The head of sales for Yamaha is flying up to attend this event to help determine their future involvement in the BDR’s. We need to pack the house and show them that our community enjoys ADV riding opportunities like Backcountry Discovery Routes. We’ll also show some highlights from other BDR trips and a bit of a teaser for the upcoming AZBDR Documentary.

Hi all. Sorry to intrude. I am wanting to progress in the manor of power and delivery but for this journey it would be best if I had some extra balls. I am wanting to explore the Washington back country discovery route and my little XR250l will not cut the task. I stand short at 5.5 w/ a 30 inch inseam I like the the DR650, would you folks help turn me on to a bike for me and the trail ahead? Any thought on the best application for the Price? Your experience is of high value to my attempt.

I'm 5'7" with a 29" inseam. I have a BMW F650gs Dakar with a kuba ( lowering) link a d a Husaberg FE390 that's been lowered about an inch and a half. Both work very well for me, off road. I think you can get a link for the DR as well. I don't think you'll find too many truly off road capable bikes suitable for the WABDR that fit us short-legged guys in stock trim, but it's usually not that expensive to fix.

My big concern with lowering the Husaberg was losing some of that tremendous ground clearance - but then I finally realized:

    1. The ground clearance on a race bike isn't for creeping over tall obstructions - it's to keep from bottoming out from big jumps, and I don't ride that way.
    2. Sure, if you lower your bike you'll lose a dab of ground clearance - but if you can't get a foot down now and then for balance and support in rough terrain, your ground clearance reduces to essentially zero when the bike tips over.
