    Brothers and sisters:

Over the last year or so I've received increasing requests from ADV inmates for my backcountry-travel guidebook Washington Byways, which the publisher let go out of print. To sate the yearning of those who dream of exploring the Evergreen State's little-traveled backways, I now have available a PDF of the 160-page book ... for just USD$14.00. (PayPal is fine, but please be sure to include an email address to send the download link to.)

Washington Byways details the state's beautiful unpaved backroads, all of them ideal for ADV and dual-sport riders. Caveat: It predates my use of GPS, my ADV motorcycling, and development of the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route by my friends on the Touratech-USA BDR team.

Yet in addition to an overview map for every route, every route description includes page numbers and page coordinates for locating it in Benchmark Maps' Washington Road & Recreation Atlas, as well as specific U.S. Forest Service map coordinates.

And ... most of the roads that comprise the WABDR are detailed in the book; they're just not identified as such because the WABDR was developed more than a decade after I chronicled Washington's wildest roads.

So if you hear the Pacific Northwet calling your name--echoing from ocean beaches and lush rain forests to the very crest of the Olympic Range and summits in Washington's corner of the northern Rocky Mountains--answer the call. Just send me a note at:

backcountrybyways at gee mail dot com (trying to dodge spammers).

You will receive the file via either Dropbox or Google Drive, both free-and-easy file-sharing tools. Or just let me know what means of receiving the file works for you!

    Peace ...

A preview of what you'll get, and what you'll see (photos in the book are B&W) ...

    This looks COOL!!
As soon as I replace some PayPal funds........

Your example road borders the North edge of the Olympic Peninsula.
Those types of "border roads" are often the BEST unimproved roads to ride :clap

I bought this book at the beginning of 2005. This is the book that started my dual sporting adventures. A great one to say the least. I have covered almost all of the routes in the book. Thanks Tony.

Wow! That's great to hear, John_L. Thank you for letting me know. It's always gratifying to know that my work has helped others explore and enjoy the world around them.

While I originally wrote Washington Byways and the other books in my multistate series for travelers in SUVs, pickups and such, the roads are ideal for ADV riding as well.

Perhaps you (and WABDR riders) will recognize this view of Lake Chelan ...

Yeah, I bought your book and the Benchmark Washington at the same time. Two weeks later had a KLR, started hitting your routes the next weekend and did my first big ADV Alaska ride out of Seattle a few months after. Haven't looked back. Your $15 book has cost me countless thousands by now by the way.

I grew up in Port Angeles and your picture of Kloshne-Nanitch is what did it for me having viewed it from Lake Crescent area hundreds of times as a kid and never getting up there.

The WABDR ride is a fun one for sure, although breaking camp with burning trees around us this year was exciting to say the least.

Been following your Heart of the West thread and kicking it around. A bit worried about fuel on my TE610 though.

    Big thanks.

John_L, Heart of the West is sooo adaptable ... just part of its appeal. If you carry extra fuel, the only segment where fuel can be an issue is in the Great Basin of eastern Nevada and western Utah, but even there it depends on the options one chooses. At least two groups--including the group that Dockingpilot led on the first full-route ride--included the TE-610, as I recall.

Got a note from a guy in Washington who purchased the PDF of Washington Byways. He says it works great using the $4 app ezPDF Reader on his Samsung mobile smart phone/device iThingy or whatever the heck it is.

I've never tried that, tho ... I being the guy without the smart phone. :(:

ezrdr55, thanks so much for the inquiry. And sorry for the tardy response ... been out wandering the wildlands of ADVdom.

Sure, PayPal is fine: backcountrybyways at gee mail dot com.

Dropbox and Google Drive -- both free and easy-to-use file-sharing services work well for transferring the file, which is 25mb.

You're fortunate indeed to be living in such a spectacular and diverse state.

... why stop just because the route does?

Washington has so much to explore, so when the BDR ends, you can keep going ... with Washington Byways!

There's more to Washington than the WABDR, so add value to all you'll put into making that epic ride by branching out to experience even more.
